Good morning and welcome in everyone. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
Each of us hear warning signals everyday, from backup alarms on large trucks, to fire alarms in schools. But during World war II, they used air raid sirens to warn the public of incoming enemy planes. This was so families could seek safety and get quickly to shelter before any bombing began. Normally they would construct these sirens at high elevations so the sound carried further. It’s been claimed that Chrysler air raid sirens were the loudest ever constructed, and could produce 138 DB at 100 ft. They were so loud that you could become deaf if you were standing too close to them during operation. One of the loudest sirens they ever produced could be heard approximately 25 miles away and was powered by a hemi V8 engine.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Air raid sirens were meant to warn the public of approaching danger, and men of God have a similar function. They warn people about the consequences of sinful living.
“Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.” Ezekiel 3:17
Many times when there is an approaching tornado or hurricane, advanced warnings can be seen and heard on your cell phone or television. This is so that you have an opportunity to get out of the path of destruction. Make no mistake, God is going to destroy this world and everything in it, and people need to get right with Him before it’s too late.
2 Peter 3 ¹⁰ But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. ¹¹ Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
¹² Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. Matthew 24:35
Throughout the scriptures, the prophets, Apostles and disciples of the Lord were constantly warning the church. Warnings indicate possible danger, problems or some other unpleasant situations. It can be a strong reprimand or cautionary advice, meant to turn people away from dangerous situations.
“Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.” 1 Thessalonians 5:14
Colossians 1 ²⁷ To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: ²⁸ Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:
Many people who profess to follow Christ, really have no fear of God at all. You can tell by the way that they are living their lives, being completely disobedient and rebellious towards the will of God. They are like children who rebel against their dad, and don’t think that they will get punished for what they do. These people have been loved a little bit too much, coddled to the point of damnation. They have become spoiled rotten, thinking that they can do whatever they wish and somehow they will enter into Paradise. Even Jesus warned His disciples that they had better fear God.
“And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matthew 10:28
How many times have you been driving down the highway, and came to a railroad crossing. Just as you were driving up, the lights began flashing, the bells started ringing, and the gate dropped to keep you from venturing across the intersection. Those warnings are there for your protection so you don’t get killed by a 10,000 ton train! A true man of God of God constantly reminds and warns the church to keep them on the straight and narrow. People must heed their words and listen closely as they correct and rebuke when needed. Whenever somebody gets involved with sin, the bells and whistles should be ringing in their conscience, warning them to turn away before it is too late. But there are many people who just won’t listen at all. Oh they will listen to the doctrines of devils, they just won’t listen to the truth and repent.
2 Timothy 4 ² Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
³ For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; ⁴ And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
These same people don’t want to hear about hell or damnation. They don’t want to hear about gloom and doom. This is because they choose the path of willful ignorance, preferring to completely forget about God’s punishment against sin. If they don’t believe in God’s wrath, they have never known the true and living God. He will punish the impenitent and rebellious swiftly, and right up to the day of judgment.
Hebrews 10 ³⁰ For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. ³¹ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
2 Peter 3 ⁵ For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: ⁶ Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
Amazingly these people still profess to be Christian, but they are so used to going against the teachings of scripture that their conscience is completely burned.
1 Timothy 4 ¹ Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; ² Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
Advance warnings are given throughout the scriptures, so people have the opportunity to prepare themselves right now for what is coming in the future. It is the responsibility of men of God to warn the church, because they are watching out for your souls.
“Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.” Hebrews 13:17
If you heard a tornado warning, would you immediately seek shelter? If you heard a train blowing its horn, would you jump out of its way? When a man of God warns the church, will you turn away from sin? What will you do the next time that you hear,……
