Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
There is a plateau on the West Coast of South America that stretches approximately 1600 miles in northern Chile. It is a large and arid region, reaching daytime highs of around 104 Fahrenheit to around 40° at night. People have claimed that the Atacama desert is the driest non-polar desert in the world, and it’s been used as a staging area for numerous Mars expeditions because it shares the same type of environment as our neighboring planet. Deep in the heart of this desert, there’s practically no vegetation with only minimal rainfall, averaging around 15 millimeters per year. That isn’t very much, and it makes Death Valley look like a rainforest in comparison. It has also been said that beginning in 1570, there was no measurable rainfall for around 400 years!
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
In a hot and dry area such as this, one would get extremely thirsty, and would have to search diligently for some water in order to survive. Water Is something that we must have in order to sustain our physical life, but in order to obtain eternal life, we must thirst after the things of Christ Jesus in the same manner. We must seek after Him just as we would, if we were trying to find water out in a desert.
“O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;” Psalms 63:1
When I was very young, I used to ride the bus home after school. It was a very long drive, and on hot days the only air conditioning available was sliding down the windows by our seats. As each of us sat sweating in the heat, all I could think about was getting home and turning on our green garden hose that was stretched across the front lawn. You see, we had a really deep well, and after letting the water run for a little while, it got extremely cold. It was the very first thing that I looked for when I got off the bus, quickly running over to the faucet so I could quench my thirst. We must seek Jesus in the same way, having a great desire to satisfy our thirst by drinking from the Spiritual well that leads unto eternal life.
John 4 ¹¹ The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? ¹² Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? ¹³ Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: ¹⁴ But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
I used to drink so much cold water from our hose that I thought I was going to burst.
John 7 ³⁷ In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. ³⁸ He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
“Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.” Isaiah 12:3
In this world, people seek after the things that they want the most, but if we really want to live forever, we must actively seek the things of God in Christ Jesus.
“For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:” Amos 5:4
We must seek the Lord very diligently, desiring to obtain Spiritual riches that are found through the teachings of the Gospel. God will certainly reward those who seek Him in such a manner.
“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Hebrews 11:6
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33
“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” Matthew 5:6
We seek what we love, and our love must be completely focused on the one who first loved us.
“I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.” Proverbs 8:17
“Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:” Isaiah 55:6
“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.” Colossians 3:1
“When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek.” Psalms 27:8
To receive blessings from God, He must be our greatest treasure.
Matthew 13 ⁴⁵ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: ⁴⁶ Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.
Whether we are at home or at work, we can always seek after God in our prayers. He rewards that private and secret relationship with Him. We can meditate on scripture during our day, keeping His Word close to our hearts, as we seek to honor and obey Him in everything.
Psalms 105 ³ Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD. ⁴ Seek the LORD, and his strength: seek his face evermore.
In order to find anything, you have to go looking for it. To obtain it, depends on how hard you search for it. How many times have you tried to find something in your own home, and didn’t stop looking for it until you found it? To find our Lord Jesus, we must seek Him with all of our hearts, and those who do will eventually find Him.
“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13
Matthew 7 ⁷ Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: ⁸ For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
How thirsty are you for spiritual things?
“I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah.” Psalms 143:6
In order to survive this world, we must have water, but if we want to live forever, we must drink the water that leads to eternal life, which is found in our Lord Jesus. Have you devoted some time to Him today? Is he the most important need in your life? Are you seeking Him with all of your heart? Do you thirst after the things of Christ in the same manner that you would look for water, while walking across….
