Deliver Us From Evil

Good morning and welcome in everybody.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

For thousands of years people have sought protection from the dangers of this world. People who lived in castles would surround themselves with a huge moat, to protect themselves from an enemy. Others would build large walls that would encompass their home and their property. Many times when the early pioneers were traveling out west, they would circle all the wagons at night, in order to protect themselves from wild animals or anything else that might try to come against them.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

God is constantly watching over and protecting His obedient servants. He surrounds those who fear Him, fights their battles for them, and delivers them from all evil.

“The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.”  Psalms 34:7

Ever since the very beginning of the Gospel, the Apostles and disciples of Christ were taught to fear God.

“And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matthew 10:28

“And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.” Acts 5:11

“Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” Ephesians 5:21

“Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.”

  — Proverbs 3:7

“The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.”

  — Proverbs 14:27

“By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.” Proverbs 16:6

Hebrews 12 ²⁸ Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: ²⁹ For our God is a consuming fire.

“Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.” Hebrews 4:1

“Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” Philippians 2:12

Those who truly fear God in such a manner, abide in His protection and deliverance. He will fight their battles for them. Young David feared God greatly, and the Lord delivered him out of the hand of Goliath.

1 Samuel 17 ⁴⁶ This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. ⁴⁷ And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our hands. ⁴⁸ And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. ⁴⁹ And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. ⁵⁰ So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.

We don’t have to fear the wicked, we must fear God, and He will deliver us in our time of need.

“But the LORD your God ye shall fear; and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.” 2 Kings 17:39

“Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.” Psalms 97:10

God sees the heart of every man, and He knows who fears and reveres Him.

……. Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake Hebrews 12:21

“By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.” Hebrews 11:7

God delivered Daniel from the Lion’s den, and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from a furnace of Fire.

“If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.” Daniel 3:17

The Lord protected the Apostle Paul numerous times.

2 Timothy 3 ¹⁰ But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,

¹¹ Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.

“Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.” 2 Timothy 4:17

Those who truly fear God need to cry out mightily to Him for justice, and He will deliver.

“Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” Romans 12:19

His ears are open to those who fear Him.

“Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.” James 5:4

We don’t have to rely on Earthly Justice, but rather petition the creator of Heaven and Earth. It is by the hand of God Almighty that He will cast down the wicked, and plunge their lives into utter chaos.

Luke 18 ¹ And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; ² Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: ³ And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. ⁴ And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; ⁵ Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. ⁶ And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith. ⁷ And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? ⁸ I tell you that he will avenge them speedily.….

“What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31

And lastly……

“The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.” Psalms 18:2

Those who fear God have Divine protection above and beyond anything that they will find here upon the Earth. Watch when His justice prevails upon the wicked, because He will always avenge His faithful servants, and….
