Every morning people go to work, many times driving their own personal vehicle to their place of employment. It may be a long drive, or it may only be a short one, but let’s imagine that you were on your way to work one morning, but on your drive you saw your neighbor walking along the side of the road. He too is also on his way to work, but because his vehicle is broken down and isn’t working, he has to try to walk the entire way to his job.
Now if you saw this, what would you do? Would you stop, pull over, and give him a ride? Would you have enough compassion to show your neighbor love and help them in their time of need? Hopefully you would, because it is that feeling, love, that we must be able to show others. We must take the love God has for us, and in turn love others the same way.
1 John 3:16-18 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
Love is defined as “unselfish loyal and benevolent, and to have concern for the good of another.”
If you have a child you should know what love is. A baby will need everything given to them when they are first born. They are born naked, without anything at all and with no way of providing for themselves. They require food, clothing, and a safe place to stay. This must all be provided for the child if they are to survive, and the parents should see this need, and fulfill it.
Well likewise in the church there may be people who have needs. Someone may not have the necessary clothing, food, or shelter. Maybe it is freezing cold outside and they don’t have a winter jacket to keep warm with. If we see something like this, we in the church need to be filled up with the love of God and fill those needs. That is what Christ taught, to love one another, as He has loved us.
John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
Just think about how the world would be if everyone lived this way. If everyone loved each other they wouldn’t be living in sin, and sinning towards each other. They would see their neighbor in need, and they would help them. Just look at the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:30-37
And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.
But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,
And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.
Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?
And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
So do you see? Love will see a need and fill it. It will be compassionate and caring. Jesus showed us His love when He came to the Earth and died for the sins of the world. We needed something. We needed salvation and the forgiveness of our sins. And Jesus gave us them. And while no one else can save us and give us the gift of salvation, we can still show as much love towards others as we can.
Do you see anyone in need? Can you help them? Will you help them? Let the love of Christ flow through you and out towards others!
In Christ
Andrew
