If you walk up to a pop machine and put a dollar in, what do you get? A pop. If you pour water over a seed and keep it moist, what happens? It sprouts and grows into a plant. If you take a needle and stick it into a balloon, what happens? It pops. All of these actions are a result of something that happened before. Something led up to that final result.
How about this: What do most people go to work for? To get a paycheck. To receive money to pay for the things that they need. They put in the time doing something, and they received the rewards for their work. From planting seeds all the way to a harvest, to working at a job, we “reap what we sow.”
This applies in our faith in Jesus Christ as well, because whatever we do in our lives, whether they be good or bad, will one day be rewarded.
Galatians 6:7-9 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
Everything that a person does in their life will be accounted for, as God sees everything that we do each and every day. When someone goes out and harms their neighbor, or spreads lies and falsehoods about someone else, God sees this. When someone shows love to their neighbor in a time of need, God is there watching. He sees everything that we do, and one day all of us will receive the reward for our works.
You may look at the parable in Luke 16 about the rich man, and how he lived a life of luxury and wealth, without a care in the world, while outside his gate lay the beggar Lazarus, plagued with sores, wanting only the crumbs from the rich man’s table. Well eventually they both died and their souls were carried away, the beggar Lazarus into Heaven, and the rich man into the torments of fire. We see how this rich man had the opportunity and ability to help the man at his gate, yet he didn’t. There he was living in the comforts of the world, but because he chose to not do anything to help that poor man outside his gate, he was cast into the fire.
We reap what we sow. Do good and we will receive a good reward. Do evil and live in sins and we will receive the payment for our sins, and receive damnation. No one knows which day it is that the Lord will take them, and for this reason we must live our lives doing as much good as we can, never wearing out. We must do good and when we do we are storing up our treasures in Heaven above, to be received when we go to be with the Lord.
Matthew 6:19-20 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
When we sow to the Spirit and live in love towards one another our rewards will be waiting for us. Just think of someone like the apostle Paul who did so much for the Lord, just think about his riches in Heaven! He was a man who certainly didn’t get weary in well doing, and he will certainly reap his rewards. We should strive to do the same, in whatever way the Lord has put before us. We all have our own purpose and job to do, so let’s go and do it!
In Christ,
Andrew
