Have you ever been waiting for something or someone to show up? Or do you know someone who waited a long time to get something? Sometimes a company will develop and produce an item that is so popular and sought after that the moment that a new batch becomes available they will almost immediately sell out, leaving those who didn’t get one very upset and impatient. They may even despair of even getting one ever, and give up all together. Even though more are promised to arrive some time in the future, they give up all hope that they will ever get one.
Well the Apostle Peter had taught that in the last days people will begin to scoff, not believing that Jesus is going to return. They will say things like “where is Jesus? He said that He was coming back, so where are the signs that point to His return?” And then they will be caught unaware when that day eventually does come.
2 Peter 3:3-14 “Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.”
Scoff is defined as ridicule or a derisive/mocking expression of scorn, contempt or reproach.
That is how those people treated Jesus when He was on the cross. In much the same way they scoffed at Jesus, telling Him that if He was truly the Christ to come down off of the cross, and save Himself.
Luke 23:35-37 “And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.
And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,
And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.”
Just because the Lord hasn’t come back yet doesn’t mean that He isn’t coming. It takes faith to believe in something that you cannot see. Just as I believe that the sun will rise once again tomorrow morning, I believe the words of Jesus when He said that He will come again. I haven’t seen the sunrise that will happen tomorrow morning, but I believe that it will happen.
The return of Christ should be just like that to His believers. We accept the truth and validity of Christ’s promise just the same as we know and trust that the Earth will rotate one more time. We who believe in Jesus know that if Jesus said that He will come again, then He will return back again someday. Whenever that day is, we do not know, but we will wait patiently for it.
The day of the Lord is coming, which day no one on Earth knows. But we must be ready and prepared to be with the Lord. Filled up with hope, until the day that our hope is fulfilled as we wait patiently.
