The Signet Ring

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today we are going to take a look at a passage of Scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.

Each day, millions of people send and receive things in the mail, but with the rise of the internet and the increased use of computers, many people have chosen to use email instead. But whenever you use email, it can be very hard to determine if the person sending the letter is actually the person who they claim to be, which has resulted in all types of scams and fraudulent activity. In the past, many ancient civilizations would use wax seals in order to authenticate important documents. After writing a letter, they would fold it up and pour on melted wax to seal it, and then press an official signet into the wax. Signet rings have been used for this purpose since 3500 BC, and unlike a signature, they could not be forged. They were normally engraved with a unique design or a coat of arms that identified the trustworthiness of the document. When people delivered these words from the King, you knew that it was Him who had actually sent them.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Over the years, God has chosen certain men to deliver His message to the world, and the Divine Words that they preach are the seal that He has sent them.

“For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.” John 3:34

God has sent His servants into this world to preach His Holy Word, but many people refused to believe them. Rather than receiving them, they cast out their name as evil and persecuted them instead.

Luke 11 ⁴⁷ Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. ⁴⁸ Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres. ⁴⁹ Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute:

Even when God sent His only begotten Son Jesus, instead of reverencing Him, they crucified Him on the cross.

Matthew 21 ³³ Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country: ³⁴ And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. ³⁵ And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. ³⁶ Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise. ³⁷ But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. ³⁸ But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. ³⁹ And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. ⁴⁰ When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen? ⁴¹ They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.

The world does not receive the truth of Holy Scripture and as a result will persecute God’s chosen servants and treat them shamefully.

“Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.” John 15:20

“But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention.” 1 Thessalonians 2:2

1 Thessalonians 2 ¹⁴ For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews: ¹⁵ Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:

In order to obtain eternal life, we must believe in the ones that God has sent.

John 6 ²⁸ Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? ²⁹ Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

“And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.” John 5:38

Even though God sent John the Baptist, certain people would not believe in him or the message that he spoke.

John 1 ⁶ There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. ⁷ The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. ⁸ He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. ⁹ That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

“For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.” Matthew 21:32

The Apostle Paul was another servant who was sent by God,  but there were those who wouldn’t believe him either.

“But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:” Acts 9:15

“But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.” Acts 13:50

Although God used many different men to write the teachings of scripture that we have today, they all preach the same message by the same Holy Spirit. Those who are from God will speak the Words of God, and be involved with the same works that Christ Jesus did.

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” John 14:12

Ephesians 4 ¹¹ And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; ¹² For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: ¹³ Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

To know that a man of God is authentic, the only proof that you need is the Words that they preach. The teachings of Holy scriptures are the seal that they have been sent by the King, approved by God, and stamped inside the tables of their hearts with His Divine and everlasting…
