Leaving Sin Behind

When someone is going on a trip, they are going to depart, or leave their home to go somewhere else. Maybe it is time to go and get some groceries, so someone gets in their car and drives to the supermarket.

Maybe someone is going to visit a friend in another state, but on their way they accidently take a wrong turn and go the wrong way. Unless they depart, or leave off of their current course, they will not arrive at their friends house.

Or a person might need to empty the trash can, so they take the bags outside to the dumpster or take it to the garbage can on the curb and leave it there. They no longer keep it anymore, but they get rid of it.

That is what we are supposed to do when we sin. We need to empty all of the trash and sin in our lives, and we need to leave it at the curb. We need to leave it behind and not return back to it.

2 Timothy 2:19 “Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”

The word “depart” means “to leave someone, someplace, or something; to deviate from.”

Before someone becomes a Christian, they might live the way some in the world live: only concerned about themselves, proud and arrogant, covetous, etc. But when that person learns about Christ and the way He lived and wants them to live, they need to leave that old life behind, and depart from sin.

Ephesians 4:22-24 “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”

Instead of stealing from someone, they give to the poor. Instead of being filled with hate or animosity towards their neighbor, now they show others love, and treat others the way that they would want to be treated. No longer do they tell lies about or to others, now they speak the truth.

Colossians 3:9 “Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;”

We are supposed to mortify the deeds of the flesh. That means that you “kill” or “deaden” off any wrong deeds. The worldly person that we used to be needs to become deadened, and we need to be reborn through the Spirit of God. We need to leave that old life behind and begin anew.

2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

Remember in Luke 13, how the people were talking about how sinful the Galilaeans were, but what did Jesus tell them?

Luke 13:2-3 “And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.”

Unless they repented from their sins, they too would perish.

So what did we learn today? We need to depart from sin and live a live for God. What do you do with old, ripped up clothing? You throw it away, and get rid of it. We need to throw away the deeds of the flesh and become a new creature for Christ.
