His Burden Is Light!

Years ago the road that we live on would get very soft and muddy as soon as the winter snow had melted. Consisting mainly of heavy, yellow clay, our road would become nearly impassible until it dried up. Not only was it difficult to drive on, but it was a challenge just to walk on it as well. When you walked on the road the clay would begin to collect on the bottom of your shoes. Each step that you took would pick up a little more clay as your shoes would slowly become heavier and heavier.

I can remember several occasions when I put my foot onto the ground and tried to take another step but my shoe would be pulled completely off of my foot because of all of the clay weighing it down. But when we got back to the house and could take off our shoes, what a difference it was! Just to be free of all that weight was a wonderful feeling.

Psalms 38:4  “For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.”

Sin can weigh a person down. Like the clay, it can accumulate more and more until it becomes so heavy that you are filled with a great heaviness inside.

Jesus wants to take that burden away. He wants to make it easier for us and all that we need to do to come and learn from Him. Through His forgiveness Jesus can take away that weight of your sins, and give you peace in your soul.

Matthew 11:28-30  “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

It is an invisible weight that we all, without Christ, bear. It weighs on our soul as a constant reminder of our sins. And it will continue to remain upon us unless we come to Christ to have it removed.

Sin is like picking up rocks on the side of the road, and throwing them into your backpack. One by one they will weigh you down, but Jesus wants us to come to Him so that He can take our sins upon Himself. He wants to take our burden away, and make our burden light.

But unlike our muddy shoes, we cannot “take off” our sins on our own. We cannot do some kind of task, or do so many good things to take away that burden of sin. The only way that this is possible is by taking Christ’s yoke upon ourselves, and giving our sins to Him.

Some people just seem bent on making things hard for themselves. They want to do everything on their own, without the help of others, but the absolution of sin cannot be done by oneself. It can only be done through Christ.

Will you take Christ’s yoke upon yourself? Will you let Him make it easy for you? His yoke is easy, and His burden is light!
