Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today we are going to take a look at a passage of Scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.
Around twenty years ago, I took my family with me to New Mexico, when I spent a period of time spreading the gospel. Someone was letting us stay in their unused trailer house, but on certain days it got extremely warm inside, and although there were windows in the home, they didn’t do very much to help us cool down. But for the first time in my life, I was introduced to a swamp cooler which was a large metal box that sat on top of the building. It reminded me of a large truck radiator, or refrigerator unit that you might see on a small grocery store. When you looked inside, it was filled with huge foam sponges that were constantly kept moist by a flow of water trickling through them. A large fan would blow air through the sponges, and as the water evaporated, It produced noticeably cooler air. Amazingly, it would take the temperature down around 20°, just enough to feel comfortable enough to fall asleep.
This reminds me of the Christian Life
Many people will do just about anything to avoid the heat, whether it’s sitting in front of a fan, turning on an air conditioner, or plugging in a swamp cooler. Sometimes we pour water on our head, or even jump into a lake to escape the heat momentarily, but there will be a time that people will not be able to cool themselves down at all. They will wish for a drink of cold water but will not find it, when the heat of God’s wrath comes upon all of the impenitent on Judgment Day.
Luke 16 ²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; ²³ And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. ²⁶ And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. ²⁷ Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: ²⁸ For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. ²⁹ Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. ³⁰ And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. ³¹ And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
Unlike the changes of the seasons that we have here on Earth, the Lake of Fire will be permanent and unchangeable, an eternal place of suffering for all those who have refused to love God by repenting of their sins.
2 Thessalonians 1 ⁶ Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; ⁷ And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, ⁸ In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: ⁹ Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
Many people ask why a God of love would punish people in such a manner, but it is because they never loved His son Jesus enough to turn away from their sinful living. Even when He sent His precious Son to this world, they crucified Him on the cross. For thousands of years, Christ and His disciples have preached the message of repentance, but many people continue to turn away from the truth, a prophecy that is being fulfilled, even as we speak.
Matthew 13 ¹⁴ And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: ¹⁵ For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
Those who hate the teachings of scriptures hate God, and will not find any place of mercy or pity with Him. He will punish all those who never truly loved His Son and submitted to His purpose. True love for God is proven through our obedience to His will, and those who teach otherwise do so to their own damnation
“He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” John 14:21
Romans 2 ⁵ But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; ⁶ Who will render to every man according to his deeds: ⁷ To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: ⁸ But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, ⁹ Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; ¹⁰ But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: ¹¹ For there is no respect of persons with God.
“Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord GOD.” Ezekiel 22:31
God through his incredible Grace grants us an opportunity in Christ to become a brand new creature. He does not rejoice in the death of the wicked, He wants them to turn from their evil ways. Those who willfully reject His call to repentance will certainly perish.
“And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” Matthew 25:46
God’s righteous judgment is quickly approaching, and for all those who have chosen to reject His will in Christ Jesus will find themselves cast into an eternal Lake of Fire. It is a place where the heat will never be quenched, where a cold drop of water will never be found, and where a cool and refreshing breeze will never be felt, as it blows gently,…out of….
