Summer Vacation

Good morning and welcome in everybody.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

How many of you were like me when you were a kid and couldn’t stand sitting in classes all day long. A lot of my time in high school I sat behind my desk, tone deaf and oblivious to the things that were being said and taught in the classroom. My mind would usually drift off somewhere else, waiting patiently to hear that final bell at the end of the day. Oh, there were certainly times when the teacher would talk about something that you found interesting, or you took an elective that you really enjoyed, but for the most part, you found it boring, time consuming, and couldn’t wait for summer vacation.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Our ears tend to perk up at the things that we want to learn about the most. We like to listen to things that we feel are important to us. How important is eternal life to you? God is ready and willing to give us the wisdom we need to obtain it!

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” James 1:5

Wisdom is something that is freely given to us by God, but you have to go looking for it. You have to seek after it just like you would seek for buried treasure. It needs to be so important that you show up for class early! Have you ever had a class like that? A lot of people in our area will seek diligently for walleye, and others will put forth great efforts to shoot a black bear. Obviously, if you put enough time into it, you will obtain those things that you are looking for. Many people attend classes in a field that they want to learn about. I mean, if you want to learn about how to bait a bear, there are men in our area who are knowledgeable enough to educate you. But if we are going to learn anything during our life, it needs to be important enough to us to show up and receive instruction.

The same is true of God’s Wisdom, we must put forth the effort to obtain it. If you don’t go looking for it, how are you ever going to find it? If you don’t appropriate a certain amount of time to your day to learn, how will you ever gain access to the knowledge of God? Although not everybody was seeking Jesus for the right reason, there were certain people who were driven by a great desire to understand the will of God. That is a great passion to possess, because unlike the fading temporal concerns of this world, it is an interest that leads to salvation and eternal life. One thing’s for sure, you won’t find the wisdom of God unless you go looking for it.

Luke 11 ⁹ And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. ¹⁰ For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Think of how much the things of God’s kingdom were worth to Moses. Imagine all of the riches of Egypt that were within his reach, but God was more important than any of it. He completely walked away from it all in order to obtain the riches that are found in Christ Jesus.

Matthew 13 ⁴⁴ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. ⁴⁵ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: ⁴⁶ Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

Not everybody places the same value on certain items. For example, to one person an antique clock might be worth ten dollars, but to the next it might be worth a hundred. You might give somebody a free Bible, but it never really interested them. But to the next person, the things inside become an all-consuming passion, a treasure of Spiritual riches that they read everyday of their life.

Proverbs 2 ¹ My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;

² So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; ³ Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; ⁴ If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;

⁵ Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. ⁶ For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

What would you ask for, if you were given the opportunity to receive anything you wanted? More than anything in this world, Solomon wanted God’s wisdom.

1 Kings 3 (K ⁵ In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee. ⁶ And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. ⁷ And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in. ⁸ And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. ⁹ Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

¹⁰ And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. ¹¹ And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; ¹² Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.¹³ And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.

God wants to give us wisdom, but it requires a seeking heart. Sadly, many people are not going to be interested in the teachings of Holy scripture. Their mind is somewhere else, thinking about the pleasures of this world, and dreaming about……
