Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from The book of Psalms.
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” Psalms 34:18
Contrition is an extremely important quality to possess, because without it you won’t be saved. It requires humility in the presence of God in order to obtain it. The heart must break and be filled with genuine sorrow for sins that you have committed. Contrition is one of the greatest things that this world lacks, and also the reason why there is so much sin that surrounds us. There are huge forms of false Christianity who are now in open rebellion against God’s will. I mean, they are not even making the attempt to subordinate themselves to God’s purpose. People certainly want to believe that they are going to be in heaven, but that narrow passageway can only begin when their hearts humbly accept the error of their way. As we speak, people’s hearts are become hardened by the sinfulness of pride. God is ready and willing to forgive, but people must first humble themselves with a broken heart, and purify themselves by turning away from their sins to the will of God.
James 4 ⁶ But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. ⁷ Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. ⁸ Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. ⁹ Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. ¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
In order for the heart to become purified from sin, it must first be broken, but rather than contrition, today’s world is surrounded with the darkness of pride. Many people who profess spirituality are actually refusing to open up their hearts and ears to the truth of Holy Scripture, which is a fulfillment of prophecy.
2 Timothy 4 ² Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. ³ For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; ⁴ And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
Matthew 13 ¹⁴ And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: ¹⁵ For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
We must come to the rock of Jesus Christ with a contrite and broken heart.
“And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.” Matthew 21:44
You can tell people who don’t possess the quality of contrition because they resist humble submission to the will of God. They are inclined to disobey but will still claim to be a follower of Christ. These people are very similar to the ones who came out to see John the Baptist. They were very religious, but the religion that they possessed lacked the fruit of contrition; and John warned them about it.
Matthew 3 ⁷ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? ⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: ⁹ And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. ¹⁰ And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Someone who’s truly broken wants to repent and do God’s will. Those who choose not to reconcile with biblical truth are not penitent at all. When a heart is broken, it will express great remorse because it is affected by the guilt of one’s own conscience. It is to feel deep self reproach for the wrong things that you have committed, which will result in obedient and heartfelt actions. Many false forms of Christianity will throw money in an offering plate or give things to a church but these things are pointless when people reject obedience, contrition, and submission to the will of God. The sacrifices that God wants are a broken heart of contrition, and to weep and wail for your sinful deeds, because there is no revival without contrition.
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” Psalms 51:17
“For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” Isaiah 57:15
In order to be healed by the Comforter, people must first mourn for the wicked things they have done.
“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4
The following passage is one of the greatest examples of biblical contrition.
Luke 7 ³⁶ And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to meat.
³⁷ And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, ³⁸ And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. ³⁹ Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner. ⁴⁰ And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.
⁴¹ There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty..⁴² And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? ⁴³ Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged. ⁴⁴ And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. ⁴⁵ Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.N⁴⁶ My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. ⁴⁷ Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. ⁴⁸ And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven. ⁴⁹ And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also? ⁵⁰ And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
Only through contrition will you ever reconcile with a brother you have wronged. Only through contrition will you ever be able to perform the will of God. Only through contrition will you ever weep for the sins that you have foolishly committed. If you desire eternal life, it’s going to take a lot more than religion. It’s going to take more than Church attendance. It’s going to require a truckload of humility and a contrite and…..
….. Broken Heart
