Presumptuous Sins

Good morning and welcome in everybody.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from Psalms 19.

“Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.” Psalms 19:13

Someone who is presumptuous shows very little respect for God by doing things that are outside the teachings of our faith. When you are educated in the teachings of Holy Scriptures, you are no longer ignorant, but have been instructed in the will of God. Someone who is presumptuous is filled up with pride and throws caution to the wind. They don’t care about the consequences for their actions, and like a willful child, they stomp their feet and slam the front door on the things of God.

Presumptuous sins are done……

1. Deliberately

Deliberately means consciously,  intentionally or on purpose. It is done in a premeditated manner. It is something that is decided and done after thinking it through.

2. Willfully

Willfully is defined as intentional and deliberately, or having a stubborn and determined intention to do as one wants, regardless of the consequences. Willfully is to be obstinately self-willed, displaying a bold defiance to one’s conscience and the teachings of Christ.

3. Insolent:

Insolent is showing a rude and arrogant lack of respect. For example, in the Christian household, the husband needs to be held in reverence. If the wife or children choose to mock and resist his commands, it is an act of willful defiance.

So, presumptuous sins is to do something intentionally that goes against one’s conscience, and the teachings of scripture. It is to sin purposefully and in full knowledge of what you are doing. Your dad might ground you for the weekend, and command you to stay at home, but Friday night you sneak out the window and go downtown instead. That is a presumptuous sin, because it was done in full knowledge of what he told you to do. Don’t be shocked when it stirs him up to wrath. Many people who profess to be Christian will do these types of things, assuming that they can get forgiven for it later, but willful sin is egregious in the sight of God.

Hebrews 10 ²⁶ For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, ²⁷ But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. ²⁸ He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: ²⁹ Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? ³⁰ For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will.recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. ³¹ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

“And all the people shall hear, and fear, and do no more presumptuously.” Deuteronomy 17:13

In my own mind, presumptuous sins are very similar to rebellion because they both share the same qualities. They are to display an “I don’t care”  attitude. It is to overstep the bounds of scriptural authority in a very haughty and rebellious spirit. God hates this sin, and it will be punished. Imagine knowing what a drill sergeant expects of you, but in full knowledge you tell him to take a hike and do your own thing instead. What do you think the response is going to be? To rebel is to oppose authority and think or behave differently then what you know you should. It is to flaunt willful disobedience at those who are over you in the Lord in the church.

I have told Andrew time and time again, that you never want to go there with God.  We must grow in the fear of the Lord, knowing that He is perfectly just and is going to punish sin. Many people only preach the love of God, but to truly love God is to fear Him, for He is to be held in reverence above all others. He washes all of our sins away by taking our death upon Himself at the cross, and then to sin willfully against His commands? Who does such a thing? Someone who doesn’t love God.

“If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha.” 1 Corinthians 16:22

When you are out driving down the highway, sometimes you might exceed the speed limit because you are focusing on your children rather than the speedometer. This is a lot different than someone doing 120 mph in a 30 zone. This is above and beyond the limit, and will only stir up an officer to wrath. There’s a big difference between intentional, and unintentional. Willful and presumptuous sins stir up not only God’s wrath, but Earthly authorities as well.

Romans 13 ¹ Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. ² Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. ³ For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: ⁴ For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. ⁵ Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

From a king in a foreign land, to a dad over his own household, God created all places of authority in this world.

“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:” Colossians 1:16

Not everybody in a place of authority uses their position for the pursuit of Justice. After all, Jesus spoke about an unjust judge, who wouldn’t do justice until he was absolutely forced to. But remember that the Lord Jesus submitted Himself to Pilate who had the power to deliver him, but did nothing to prevent Him from being crucified. No matter what happens, it is a good work to obey authorities, because it is an office in this world that has been created by God. Whether or not they use their office lawfully, they will answer to Christ Jesus for what they do, just like everybody else. Keep them in your prayers to make wise decisions on behalf of others.

“Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,”  Titus 3:1

So whatever place of authority it may be, whether God, a king, or even your own dad, submission to authority is the path to Godliness. You must learn to submit to those who are over you, and at all times keep yourself from…..
