Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to ask you a little question.
How many of you have filled up a glass half full of water and then run your wet finger in circles around the top of the rim? More than likely, if you did it correctly you heard a clear note resonating from the glass. If you added a little more water it would change the pitch. I’ve tuned many pianos throughout the years, but to make sure they were tuned correctly, I always used a tuning fork. When you tapped it on the piano, you could put it to your ear, and then tune the string to that pitch. Most people credit the British musician John Shore with inventing the tuning fork back in 1711. A lot of people use digital tuners nowadays, but the tuning fork has survived the test of time. It is still in use, and you don’t even need a battery! The one thing about a tuning fork is that its pitch always stays the same. The note that you heard yesterday will be the same note that you hear next week. It is a constant reference point that we can go back to, to make sure that everything keeps in perfect tune.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
God’s Word is very much like a tuning fork, one that we must use to adjust things in our lives that are out of harmony with the will of God. Like tuning a piano, men of God in the church are trying to make sure that each person is walking in the one true faith. Like a tuning fork, the Word of God is unchangeable, and its perfect pitch rings out the sound of Truth into our ears. Through humble submission to its teachings and corrections, we can be ready for a beautiful performance, and tuned to absolute perfection.
2 Timothy 3 ¹⁶ All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: ¹⁷ That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
Many people have had the opportunity to participate in a high school band, but before you sit down to play together, you must first tune up all of your instruments. Some people like to play acoustic guitar, and will spend a few minutes every day adjusting their tuning pegs to the right pitch. But whenever you tune things, you have to begin at a reference point such as a tuning fork. Likewise, in order to tune our faith, we must compare our lives to the teachings of Holy Scripture.
“Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith;…… 2 Corinthians 13:5
When we are all tuned to the truth, we can make beautiful music together!
“Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;” Philippians 1:27
Each of us are like a string on a piano, but when you tune a piano, some of the strings might not need any attention, while others are way out of tune. Some of them will need to be muted as you work on the ones that need to be stretched back into shape. Some strings can be very difficult, and will require a lot of twisting and rebukes to get them back on pitch. But like shaping a hot horseshoe on an anvil, we must allow God to shape us into what He wants us to become.
Ephesians 4 ⁴ There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; ⁵ One Lord, one faith, one baptism, ⁶ One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. ⁷ But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. ⁸ Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. ⁹ (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? ¹⁰ He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
¹¹ And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; ¹² For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: ¹³ Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: ¹⁴ That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; ¹⁵ But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
When a painter sets up his easel, he will constantly look back and forth between the landscape and the canvas, until he finally completes a perfect replica of what he sees. In order to be a follower of Jesus, we need to keep looking into the teachings of scripture to see if our lives line up with the will of God. To become a child of God, we must follow the Son of God, being transformed by the truth a scripture, and recreated into His image.
“But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 3:18
“And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:” Colossians 3:10
In order for an old piano to become new again, it’s going to require a complete tune-up, and for those who desire eternal life, it will require becoming a new creature in Christ, born again by the Word of God.
“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” 1 Peter 1:23
To become like Him, we must walk as He walked.
Colossians 2 ⁶ As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: ⁷ Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
The more obedient that we become, the more our lives can be completely transformed by His Holy Spirit. We must humbly allow God’s Word to fine-tune us, using the scriptures as our unmovable reference point, just like the perfect pitch of…
