The Election of God

Good morning and welcome in everybody.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from the Book of Romans.

“Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.”  Romans 11:5

When you are elected, you are chosen to a certain position or calling. Out in the world they have elections all the time, and people will cast their ballots in order to choose someone to lead their state or country. But all of the offices that you could ever be elected to in this world are temporary, as this world and everything in it will be someday burned up by God. To hold Earthly offices you are elected by the people, but to obtain eternal life you are elected by God Himself.

John 15 ¹⁶ Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

The Apostle Paul was one such man, who was chosen by God to deliver the message of salvation to the people.

Acts 9 ¹⁰ And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias.  And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord. ¹¹ And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth, ¹² And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight. ¹³ Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem: ¹⁴ And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name. ¹⁵ But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel: ¹⁶ For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name’s sake. ¹⁷ And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. ¹⁸ And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.

When people are elected to office in this world, many times they are chosen because everybody likes them, and they are considered wise and mighty in the things of this world. But that is quite different from the men that God chooses. He picks men who are hated and despised by the world, those who are least esteemed in the eyes of the public.

1 Corinthians 1 ²⁶ For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:

²⁷ But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; ²⁸ And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: ²⁹ That no flesh should glory in his presence.

Jesus could have picked anybody to have been His Apostles. He could have picked some religious leaders, or others who were high up in Judaism, but instead, He chose some simple occupational fishermen, and even a tax collector who was hated by the public.

John 15 ¹⁸ If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. ¹⁹ If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

For thousands of years true men of God have been hated by this world. This is because they stand up for the truth of scripture when no one else will. The world loves false prophets, because they tell people exactly what they want to hear, but they are an abomination to God.

“And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.” Luke 16:15

John 15 ²⁰ Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

²¹ But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.

The elect of God believes the truth of scripture, which results in humble submission and obedience to his Divine will and purpose.

“But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:” 2 Thessalonians 2:13

Remember that throughout this world many judges are elected to office. But men who faithfully serve Christ are elected to the highest court of all, where they will judge the entire world on Judgment Day.

1 Corinthians 6 ² Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? ³ Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?

Jude 1 ¹⁴ And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, ¹⁵ To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. ¹⁶ These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage.

The elect of God are called out of sinful living, in order to walk in goodness, righteousness, and Truth.

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:”  1 Peter 2:9

In this world people are normally elected to office because they carried favor with the people. But, In order to obtain eternal life, it requires obtaining the favor of God. True men of God will be hated by this world, not received by them. This is because rather than being selected through an election of the people, they have been chosen through…..
