The Coffee Cup

Good morning and welcome in everybody.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

Whenever I have helped younger people learn how to drive, the first thing that I normally do is stop at a gas station and get a big cup of coffee. When I get back into the passenger seat, I will take a few large sips, and then remove the safety cap from the top of the cup. Rather than setting the cup into a cup holder, I’ll set it on a flat spot up on the dash and tell whoever’s driving, not to tip over my coffee. When this is done, it’s amazing the caution that is exercised by the driver. Rather than gunning it to get out onto the highway, they patiently wait for the right moment to enter into traffic. When they approach a traffic light, they will begin to slow down early rather than eventually hammering on the brakes. Instead of taking sharp corners, they will slow down, then ease through them gently.

This reminds me the Christian Life.

When you keep your eye on the coffee cup, it can prevent you from tipping it over. When we keep our eyes focused on the teachings of scripture, they can prevent us from falling into sin. Like checking the speedometer gauge to maintain the proper speed, we must look into the Word of God regularly, making sure that we are walking in the one true faith. When we keep God’s Word placed high upon the dash of our hearts, just like my coffee cup, we will never fall.

2 Peter 1 ⁴ Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. ⁵ And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

⁶ And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; ⁷ And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. ⁸ For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹ But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. ¹⁰ Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: ¹¹ For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

My cup of coffee will continue to stand on the dash without tipping over, as long as you keep focused on how you are driving. When a pilot flies an airplane, they must keep their eye on the artificial horizon, which is a gauge that helps them keep their wings level during flight. They fly through all types of dark and stormy weather, and cannot always see perfectly what is in front of them. Everyday, each of us walk through this dark and sinful world, and it is the teachings of Holy Scripture that help us to realize when we are beginning to tip over and head off course. If that were to happen, we must quickly correct ourselves through repentance, and make sure that we are keeping the wings level. Whether it’s becoming a good driver or even a great pilot requires obedience, patience, and self control, the same qualities that wel need in order to become a Saint of God. When we keep our eye on the Spiritual gauge of God’s Holy Word, we can continue to maintain the proper heading, as we continue on our flight towards Paradise.

“Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.” 1 Timothy 4:16

That coffee cup needs to stay firmly in place when you are driving, just like we need to stand strong in our faith as we drive through all of the obstructions in this world. Out on the highway, there are numerous obstacles, including potholes, traffic jams, and even animals crossing the road, but we must drive sensibly and cautiously, and remain in complete control of the vehicle at all times.

“Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.”  2 Thessalonians 2:15

John the Baptist was a man who stood strong in the faith, and like a well rooted oak tree he could not be shaken with the wind. As the storms of sin surround us, we must build our lives upon the rock of God’s Holy Word, an unshakable and secure foundation, that can never be moved.

 Matthew 7 ²⁴ Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: ²⁵ And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

²⁶ And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

²⁷ And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

For a Christian, sin is our adversary, and each of us must fight the battle of faith. Like any other battlefield, some soldiers are going to fall, but it is the soldier of Christ who has remained faithful and true to the teachings of scripture, who will be the last man standing.

Ephesians 6 ¹³ Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. ¹⁴ Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; ¹⁵ And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; ¹⁶ Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. ¹⁷ And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

To hit a baseball into the outfield, requires keeping your eye on the ball. To shoot a deer requires keeping your eye on the target. For those who want to obtain eternal life it’s going to require keeping your eye perfectly focused on the Word of God, just like taking a drive in my truck, and keeping your eye on…..
