Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
When I was about seven years old, I can remember getting into trouble at school. You see, I’m the type of person who likes to visit with others. Before I became a believer, I used to work in the retail business, and I actually enjoyed talking to the customers more than selling products. I worked at a few different radio stations and enjoyed talking with people on the air about the types of music that they liked. Because of my tendency to visit with others, it became a stumbling block to those in my classroom. I don’t think I was doing it on purpose, it was just something that came naturally to me. Because it was disrupting classtime, the teacher finally put down their foot, and handed me a large box of fresh chalk. I was to write on the blackboard for the rest of the day,….” I will not talk in class. ” I wrote it so many times that I had to erase the blackboard and start over again. My behavior in the classroom was unacceptable because it was not conducive to learning, so I submitted, and learned not to talk during class anymore.
At the end of that month I was given a message to carry home to my parents, (which I secretly opened up and read on the bus ride home.) I didn’t understand the words that were used, and was scared that I was going to get in trouble because of what it said. The short handwritten note said that my behavior had been exemplary.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
We can never go wrong when we behave ourselves, and in order to serve God perfectly we must learn to submit and obey Him in everything that we do. As children of God, our behavior must be exemplary, and it all comes down to minding your P’s and Q’s
“And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him.” 1 Samuel 18:14
There are many behaviors that are acceptable in society, but societal standards are far below the standards that God requires of a Christian. We must raise the bar so to speak, and live our lives in a manner that goes above and beyond the call of duty. In the military there are many men who have achieved a spotless record, but as a soldier of God we must become blameless in the sight of God. We need to live our lives as Christ did, which is going to require obeying Him above and beyond all others, and behaving ourselves in a perfect way.
“I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.” Psalms 101:2
Bad behavior provokes people to anger. The things that I did in school upset the teacher, and I needed to be punished in order to correct myself. When people don’t submit to authority in the world, they are punished by temporal authorities. I’ve always thought of the church as a Spiritual correctional facility, where men of God are leading us on the path of obedience to Christ. They might commend you for your actions, or rebuke you sharply depending on your behavior. Jesus was so angry at certain Jews in the temple that he went in and threw over their tables and made a scourge. At that point their behavior was completely unacceptable to Him, and He didn’t tolerate it or put up with it at all. He punished it!
John 2 ¹² After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.
¹³ And the Jews’ passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, ¹⁴ And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: ¹⁵ And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables;
¹⁶ And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise. ¹⁷ And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.
In order to enter eternal life, one’s behavior must change. That is the simplicity of the Gospel of Truth. It requires an attitude adjustment, led by the fear of God and an understanding of what He is going to do to those who choose to live in sinful behavior. A lot of people who profess the Christian faith don’t think that there is an eternal place of torment, but this is because they know nothing of divine Justice or possess reverence for the eternal judgments of God. It’s only a Christianity without correction and a religion without remorse. The Apostle taught the church that they had better be on their best behavior, otherwise they would be cast away and cut off by God.
Romans 11 ²¹ For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. ²² Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.
God is a respecter of no persons and He will treat everybody the same. Those who do evil are going to suffer for the evil that they do. Those who obey God, will be blessed for what they do.
Acts 10 ³⁴ Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: ³⁵ But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.
Some people will pray to God but He won’t listen to them. This happens because of their own disobedient and reckless behavior.
“Then shall they cry unto the LORD, but he will not hear them: he will even hide his face from them at that time, as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings.” Micah 3:4
Psalms 131 ¹ (A Song of degrees of David.) LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me. ² Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.
“Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe:” 1 Thessalonians 2:10
“For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;” 2 Thessalonians 3:7
1 Timothy 3 ¹⁴ These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: ¹⁵ But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
So if you want to eventually hear the words, “well done thou good and faithful servant,” then you will need to be good and faithful! We must strive for perfection and walk in the light, making sure that we are on our best behavior, and….
