Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
Have you ever noticed how a lot of people can remember important dates? They are so important that they will jot them down on a calendar, or make note of them in their cell phone. They never seem to forget certain holidays, their anniversary, or even someones birthday. When they get dressed in the morning, they usually remember to brush their teeth, pack their wallet, and grab their car keys as they head out the front door. They will make sure to put money in the bank, pick up the kids after school, and even go to a previously scheduled appointment somewhere.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
In my experience, I have learned that people tend to remember the things that are most important to them. I took many different courses in high school that I really don’t remember a thing about. Although the teacher spent a lot of time pouring the information into me, by the time I walked out the classroom door, I had forgotten it all. When you forget, it means to fail to remember and to cease to think of. Over the years, I have forgotten piles of information that simply were not important enough to me to remember, but there is one thing that you never want to forget, and those are the things that you have been educated in from the teachings of God’s Holy Word. Spiritual amnesia can result in the loss of ones soul, so rather than being a forgetful hearer, we must put into daily action the Spiritual knowledge that we have been freely given.
James 1 ²¹ Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. ²² But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
²³ For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
²⁴ For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
²⁵ But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
When you forget something, you are not going to accomplish the task at hand. For example, if you forget to cut the lawn, it’s not going to get done. If you forget to set your alarm, you will be late for work in the morning. The same thing happens when people forget the teachings of scripture. They forget about the lives that they are supposed to be living for God. Rather than preparing themselves for God’s coming Kingdom, more important things will begin to creep into their lives, causing them to forget the task at hand and the person that God expects them to become.
Mark 4 ¹⁸ And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, ¹⁹ And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
When you decide to go on a long fishing trip, it’s important enough to you to prepare beforehand. It’s an event that you are not going to soon forget because you are constantly thinking about it and waiting patiently for that day to come. But for a lot of people, the things that concern our own salvation are not important to them at all. If they were, they would have made preparations beforehand for God’s coming Kingdom. Someone’s salvation can be lost through neglect, simply because the teachings of our faith were not important enough for them to remember.
Matthew 25 ¹ Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. ² And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. ³ They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: ⁴ But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. ⁵ While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. ⁶ And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. ⁷ Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. ⁸ And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. ⁹ But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. ¹⁰ And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. ¹¹ Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. ¹² But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. ¹³ Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.
A sincere Christian has responsibilities towards the Lord that they need to fulfill, otherwise at Judgment Day, God will rip them to shreds.
“Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.” Psalms 50:22
“The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” Psalms 9:17
“So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite’s hope shall perish:” Job 8:13
“Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength,….Isaiah 17:10
The Apostle Jude reminds the church about the consequences for those who forget about the requirements of our faith.
Jude 1 ⁵ I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. ⁶ And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. ⁷ Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
It doesn’t matter if you claim to be a Christian or not, God will reward everyone according to their works.
Job 8 ²⁰ Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man, neither will he help the evil doers: ²¹ Till he fill thy mouth with laughing, and thy lips with rejoicing. ²² They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame; and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nought.
The disciples were constantly reminding others in the church about their obligations to God.
“Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.” 2 Peter 1:15
“Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.” 1 Corinthians 11:2
Sadly there will be many people who have been educated in the teachings of our faith, who will forget about the way that they should be living their lives, and what they are supposed to be doing. Without repentance, these people will enter into the terror of the Lord.
I have forgotten a lot of things during my lifetime, but one thing that you never want to develop is…..
………Spiritual Amnesia
