The Wooden Plow

Good morning and welcome in everybody.  Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

When we first moved out into the woods, we were pretty much snowed in during the winter months, and I don’t think I could count how many times that we have had to put on snow chains in order to get into town. After dealing with this for a few winters, I finally decided to start plowing a path to the highway, but because we were very poor, I couldn’t afford to buy one. So through trial and error and some free wood that I had on the property, I eventually designed my own instead.

I took four 8 ft planks, a few 2x4s and a 4×4, and nailed them all together into a wooden v-plow. Then I made a special 3-ft square attachment with a vertical stabilizer that I attached between the plow and the bumper of my truck. This allowed the plow to float up and down with the curvature of the road, or any small obstacles that were standing in the way. When finished it stood about 16 in tall, and everything was held together with winch straps, which allowed great flexibility while plowing. There have only been a few times that I have broken a 2×4 and both of those times were attributed to hitting frozen snowbanks. It took about twenty minutes to put on the truck but it was well worth it. It always performed it’s duties, blazing a trail through the freshly fallen snow.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

After a heavy snowfall, it can be very difficult to get out of the driveway, much less to travel down the road in front of you.  It might be cold and the snow might be deep, but someone has to get out there and start clearing the way. Men of God have been chosen to this same type of responsibility and need to faithfully rise to the occasion. They must hook up the plow and lead people on the path of Spiritual knowledge, blazing a trail to God for others to follow.

Ephesians 4 ¹¹ And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; ¹² For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: ¹³ Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: ¹⁴ That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; ¹⁵ But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

Heavy snow can wreak havoc up here in our neck of the woods, blinding a person so they cannot keep on the road in front of them. Winter snowfalls have been known to create huge drifts on the highway that can completely stop you dead in your tracks. But the things of this world can do the same thing by blinding someone to the narrow path of Christ Jesus. This is exactly the reason why the Word of God must be preached, so everybody knows where the road is!

2 Timothy 4 ¹ I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; ² Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

There are a lot of people up here who don’t have access to a plow truck, and those who do might only use them for their own driveway. Other people are just too busy and don’t have the time to help out their neighbor, which is no different than trying to find men to preach God’s Holy Word.

Matthew 9 ³⁶ But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. ³⁷ Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; ³⁸ Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

Jesus calls out to men to preach, but a lot of them are not going to heed that call. Like trying to get someone to come over to cut your lawn, they might decide to go fishing instead and not even show up. Other things will become far more important to them, such as a wife, family, or the cares of this world, and in the process they prove by their own actions that they are unworthy of God’s Kingdom.

Luke 9 ⁵⁹ And he said unto another, Follow me.  But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.

⁶⁰  Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. ⁶¹ And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. ⁶² And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

In order to preach God’s Word, Jesus must be greater than anything or anyone in your life. Those who can’t make that commitment are like flavorless salt that gets cast into the dunghill.

Luke 14 ³³ So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. ³⁴ Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? ³⁵ It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Some people will begin to preach, but shirk their duties because of a greater love for other things. There is nothing more important that you could do with your life then preach the kingdom of God, but some people will only prove that they were unfit for this honor.

Mark 4 ¹⁸ And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, ¹⁹ And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

Someone has to get out there and plow the road, but there aren’t many people doing it. The snow will only get deeper, obstructing people’s path to the kingdom. To find their way to heaven, the sheep must have a clear road to follow, and Men of God must blaze a scriptural trail for them, even if it requires using…..
