It’s not Madness

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

When I first became a believer in my heart, I had never really understood what Jesus had done for me on the cross until I was walking down the street after work one day, and a man I didn’t know gave me a free KJV Bible. I thanked him for the free book, and then he vanished, and I never saw him again. A few days later, I started reading the book of John and things started changing inside of my heart. I realized what Jesus had done on the cross for me, and from that point on, I started caring around a backpack all of the time. Inside of it, I had a Bible, a dictionary, a notebook and a concordance, and would spend many hours reading, studying and trying to understand the will of God and His purpose for my life. Since then, I’ve had numerous people reprove me, saying things such as,…

“Why don’t you go get a normal job like everybody else, and do something purposeful with your life? “

They felt it was a huge waste of time devoting so many hours to reading or studying the Bible. But what they really don’t understand is there is nothing in life but God. It is God who created us and it is God to whom we shall return. This world is simply a temporary residence that we are passing through for a brief period of time. With that in mind, the best thing that anyone of us can do, is grow in the knowledge of His will, so we can be prepared to be with Christ Jesus forever.

Acts 26 ²⁴ And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad. ²⁵ But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness.

When we begin the Christian walk, we are called to a life of knowledge and wisdom. Church is not once a week, it is everyday of the year! When we are not studying God’s Word, we are singing about it. When we are not singing about it, we are hearing it preached. When we are not hearing it preached we are meditating on it. It is continually apply oneself to the knowledge of God’s Holy Word, which might seem compulsive and obsessive to some, but it is greatly rewarded in the sight of God.

“I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:” Ecclesiastes 7:25

Like a thirst that you cannot quench, scripture became a well of Spiritual knowledge unto me, and I started to grow steadily in the teachings of the faith. God wants us to be thirsty for the Word of God, and just like a child desires milk, we must crave it every day of our lives. When a newborn baby drinks milk, they don’t drink it once, they keep coming back for it all day long. We are supposed to be thirsty for God’s wisdom, insomuch that it becomes an all consuming passion to learn and understand God’s will.

Proverbs 2 ¹ My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; ² So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; ³ Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; ⁴ If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; ⁵ Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. ⁶ For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

People can be extremely educated in this world, even going off to college for decades, but in the end, all of that knowledge is fruitless in comparison to obtaining Spiritual wisdom. Many times I will give some short quips of information from the world, but that is only for the purpose of making a Spiritual point. This world and all of its earthly knowledge will eventually be gone, but the Word of God liveth and abideth forever.

“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” Matthew 24:35

Seeking after the knowledge of God is one of the greatest pursuits you could ever have in your life, and if you become obedient to the wisdom that you have learned, you can someday enter into eternal life by the grace of God.

“Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.” 1 Timothy 4:16

The Apostle Paul was constantly praying for the church to be filled with Spiritual knowledge

“For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;” Colossians 1:9

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom…….” Colossians 3:16

The Bereans were searching the Scriptures daily.

Acts 17 ¹⁰ And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.
¹¹ These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Remember that Moses walked away from all of the treasures in Egypt, because he desired the Spiritual riches in Christ.

Matthew 13 ⁴⁴ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.
⁴⁵ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: ⁴⁶ Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

Obsessive devotion to God is not madness, its Godliness. To possess an ardent passion for learning Spiritual things is not madness, it is a gift from God.

1 Corinthians 12 ⁷ But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. ⁸ For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

Spending hours a day meditating on the things of God might be strange to a lot of people, but I guarantee you,…….
