Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
When I was pretty young, a lot of children my age would get up early in the morning and go out to the kitchen table for breakfast, but before they sat down to eat, their parents would give them a big glass of water and a small paper medicine cup filled with a large assortment of chewable tablets and vitamin supplements to eat. Some of them were shaped like cartoon characters, while others were bright and colorful. Many of them like vitamin C actually tasted pretty good, and you could suck on them just like candy. On the other hand there were others like vitamin E that you really didn’t want to chew, so you left them until the very end to swallow them whole. It seems like everybody during those years was caught up in the vitamin craze. Many parents had kitchen cabinets that were chock full of them, explaining that they would benefit your overall health, and help build up your immune system.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Like taking a vitamin, we want to fortify our hearts and our minds with the teachings of God’s Holy Word. The verses of scripture are like Spiritual vitamins for our soul, and when followed, they can protect us from all types of sinful activities in this world. Out of all the vitamins that you will ever take, these are the only ones that will help you to live forever.
“……….the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” John 6:63
It seems like many people all over the world want to try to increase their life span, but the truth is that we are in bodies that are slowly decaying. Each of our physical bodies are going through an aging process that cannot be stopped or prevented. But through faith in Jesus Christ and His teachings, we are presented with an opportunity to be able to live forever in the Kingdom of heaven, but it will require repentance towards God, and belief in the gospel of Christ. Like a child taking their vitamins, we must take our daily supplement of God’s Holy Word, because they are like Spiritual vitamins that can lead us toward our own Spiritual health and immortality.
“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” 1 Peter 1:23
Through the incredible gift of grace found in Christ Jesus, we can obtain something that we will never find here on the earth, immortality. Rather than looking in the cupboard each morning for something that cannot save you, we must earnestly seek after the soul rejuvenating teachings of Christ. The knowledge of God’s will is far more important than any of vitamin that you will ever take, because they can provide you with something that no pill will ever give you: the pathway to eternal life. When we humbly submit to the truth of scripture, an entrance into the everlasting Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ can eventually be obtained.
Romans 2 ⁵ But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; ⁶ Who will render to every man according to his deeds: ⁷ To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: ⁸ But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, ⁹ Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; ¹⁰ But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: ¹¹ For there is no respect of persons with God.
Everyday people will attempt to retrain their muscles by going to a gym and working out, but no matter how fit and trim they may be, these things can do nothing to save their eternal soul. Sometimes people will spend far too much time on temporal concerns rather than focusing on the things that can lead them to eternity.
“For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.” 1 Timothy 4:8
The more that we are filled up with God’s Holy Word, the healthier in our Christian faith that we can become. They strengthen us by filling our Earthen vessels with the everlasting things of God. To strengthen your earthly muscles you will add weights to a workout routine. To strengthen certain types of metals, they will add other things to them. For us to become stronger Spiritually, our minds need to be infused with the teachings of Holy Scripture, because only then can we undertake the transformation that is required of us to obtain eternal life.
James 1 ²¹ Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
²² But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. ²³ For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: ²⁴ For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. ²⁵ But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
So just like people take their vitamins and then hit the gym, we must receive the Word of God and then put them into action. In order for our souls to become healthy, we must wholeheartedly believe the truth of scripture and allow them to completely transform our lives.
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:2
Although death is working in our mortal bodies, through faith in Christ, life is working on the inside.
1 Corinthians 15 ²¹ For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. ²² For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
2 Corinthians 4 ¹⁶ For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. ¹⁷ For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; ¹⁸ While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
Although many people seek to improve their physical health, seeking the teachings of Christ Jesus can lead us to eternal life.
“Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.” John 6:68
Gods Word is like a prescription for our souls, one that we must take regularly to grow stronger Spiritually. The human body is only going to last for a short period of time but for those who want to increase their life span, immortality is available. Through the blood of Christ this opportunity is extended to each one of us, but we must repent of our sins, align ourselves with the will of God, and do works meet for repentance.
So instead of reaching into the cupboard each morning, we must reach out for God’s Holy Word, remembering to drink the water of the Holy Spirit, and keep……
