Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
Many years ago, before I became born again Christian, I was heavily involved in sales and marketing. Over the years I’ve sold all types of things from advertising, vacuum cleaners, and even shoes. I’ve sold so many shoes during my life I don’t even know if I could count them, from cross trainers, running shoes, moccasins, cowboy boots and even satin pumps for wedding parties. Occasionally, a large group of bridesmaids would come into the store and were looking for dress shoes for their wedding. When I finally had sized them all up, I would spend the next few days dyeing them to the appropriate color. They would give me a piece of fabric from their dress and I would have to match the colors of the shoes to their swatch, which is not as easy as it seems. But normally, the satin pumps that I sold were incredibly slippery, and if the girls weren’t extremely careful they could slip on wet linoleum, or a snowy sidewalk. So to prevent this, I would attach an adhesive strip to the bottom of their shoe called a surefoot. Like a piece of sandpaper, it had a non-slip surface that would prevent them from getting hurt or falling down.
This reminds me of the Christian life.
As we walk through this sinful world, it is God’s Holy Word that gives us a sure footing. The temptations of sin are all around us, but if we continue to walk in the teachings of scripture, they can protect us from getting hurt. God’s Word is what gives us traction in our daily lives, but without regular exposure and obedience to the teachings of the truth, people are going to slip and fall down.
Hebrews 2 ¹ Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. ² For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; ³ How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
When we are educated in the teaching of scripture, we need to pay close attention to what we have learned because it has always been said, when you are not paying attention, accidents can happen.
At one of my jobs I was the lead foreman on a safety committee, and my job was to make sure that people were performing their jobs efficiently and safely, otherwise they became a danger not only to themselves but to other employees around them. If they willingly chose not to obey safety protocol, then they were written up and it was entered into their work record. There are many people today who profess to be Christian who would fail God’s safety exam, because they are not paying attention to the life that they are supposed to be living for Christ. The teachings of Christ are a safety net, and we need to continue to walk in them, because our own salvation depends upon it.
1 Timothy 4 ¹³ Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. ¹⁴ Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. ¹⁵ Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. ¹⁶ Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
When I was in high school I spent many hours in the swimming pool one summer in order to obtain my lifeguard certification. After treading many hours in the water, and jumping into the deep end of the pool to save my fellow classmates, we would all head down to the locker room to get changed and go home for the day. As everybody rushed to get down to the showers, I tended to take my time, and go a little slower. You see, there were many steps that you had to go down in order to get to the locker room, and they were made of ceramic tile and extremely slippery. But in the middle of each step there was a non-slip pad that looked like a big piece of sandpaper stuck on the floor. As long as you stayed on them they would keep you from slipping and falling down. I had seen many students get hurt simply because they forgot to pay attention to where they were walking. Many people who profess to be Christian are doing the exact same thing today. Rather than walking safely in the teachings of scripture, they are not paying attention to what they are supposed to be doing. Scriptures can prevent us from falling, as long as we remember to do with they say.
James 1 ²¹ Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
²² But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. ²³ For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: ²⁴ For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. ²⁵ But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
2 Peter 1 ¹⁰ Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: ¹¹ For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
The Christian Life is ultimately about a complete transformation which is something that many people do not want to do. They want to try to walk in the world with their left foot, and try to maintain their religion with the right. How quickly they forget that judgment day is quickly approaching, and unless they repent, they too shall perish.
Romans 13 ¹¹ And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. ¹² The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
2 Peter 2 ⁴ For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; ⁵ And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;
⁶ And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; ⁷ And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: ⁸ (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) ⁹ The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:
God grants us an incredible gift of grace, one that He shed His own blood in order to provide, but we must take great heed, and pay attention to the things that we have learned from scripture. Each verse in the Bible is like a stepping stone that when adhered to, can guide us safely across the river of temptations in this world. As long as you continue down the path of biblical truth you will never fall, because God’s Holy Word can prevent us from slipping, just like…..
