Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from the book of James.

James 4:13-16  Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

First of all, God is in control of everything that happens in our lives. We rise and sleep according to his will, and do this or do that according to His purpose. Many people want to feel a sense of control over their lives but the truth is, absolutely nothing happens without God’s intervention. We can petition God with our requests but it will only happen if it is according to His will and purpose. In the flesh, many people believe that they are going to will something into existence by their own initiative. They will make extravagant plans for the future, or high reaching goals thinking that they will come to pass because of their own persistence, but how completely flawed this thinking is.

Proverbs 27:1 Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

Matthew 6:34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

A lot of people make grandeur plans about what they are going to do with their lives, such as the home that they will have, the job they will work at, and the wealth that they will attain, but this is the way that proud people live their lives, answerable to no one else but themselves. God can change things in a heartbeat if He so desires, and take someone in a completely different direction. Proud people will boast about what they are going to do tomorrow. They boast about what they are going to accomplish and what they are going to do, but that is utter wickedness and complete foolishness. This is because they haven’t even bothered to factor in what God will decide to do during their day. It is certain that whatever happens will be according to His by your leave.

Hebrews 6:3 And this will we do, if God permit.

Like I said, it is the carnal nature that wants to be in control of one’s life, actions and longevity. People such as these will make great boasts claiming that they are going to be prosperous, even rejoicing in future achievements, but they have no idea what God is going to do in their life tomorrow. You can recognize boasting because there is no mention of the Lord at all in the things that they do. Rather than placing their trust in Him from day to day, their eyes are placed years down the road, focusing on where they want to be, rather than where God is going to place them. Many people will join hands with each other claiming that they are going to usher in a new era of peace across the world, but because of their proud boasting, God is going to tear them to shreds.

1 Thessalonians 5:2-3 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

Consider when young David fought Goliath. His faith and trust was placed completely in the Lord, not in his own strengths or abilities. The Lord had delivered him many times before, and he knew that if it was God’s will, He would deliver him again.

1 Samuel 17:33-37 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth. And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.

As Goliath boasted about what he was going to do to David, based upon his own physical strength and armor, David’s boast was in the Lord.

1 Samuel 17:45-47 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our hands.

Perilous times are coming, filled up with men who boast about what they will do, rather than what God will do.

2 Timothy 3:2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud,…..

Romans 1:30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters,…….

Their vain boasting is like putting a match to the tinder.

James 3:5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

Just like David, our boast must be in the Lord Jesus!

2 Corinthians 10:17 But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

Psalms 34:2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.

Even the Apostle Paul mentioned numerous times in the scriptures that things would come to pass only if it was according to God’s will.

1 Corinthians 4:19 But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will,……

Acts 18:21 But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will…….

1 Corinthians 16:7 For I will not see you now by the way; but I trust to tarry a while with you, if the Lord permit.

Many people rejoice in their own boastings, thinking that they will do this or that during their lifetime, but it is the carnal nature that leaves God completely out of the equation like that. Just know this, if the Lord will, we will do this or that, because I guarantee you that nothing will ever happen unless it is according to the will of God. Nothing in this life happens without His divine intervention, and,…..
