Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from 1st Corinthians, but first of all…
When we become a Christian, there are a few main things that we need to do right away, the first of which is being baptized by submersion. I baptized each one of my children in a large tub in our living room, completely submerging them underneath the water. But before baptizing anyone, they must be old enough to understand exactly what they are doing, because at that point they are dying to themselves, and beginning a brand new life in Christ Jesus.
Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Water baptism is a requirement in order to be saved eternally.
Mark 16:15-16 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
When people are submerged beneath the water, any previous sins that have been committed are completely washed away.
Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
Another thing that must be done soon after you have been baptized, is to partake of Holy Communion. Jesus taught in the scriptures that you don’t have any life in you unless you partake of His body and His blood. This means that no matter how much you read the Bible, or even go to church, people won’t be able to enter into eternal life unless they partake of the sacrifice of Christ Jesus. This is another requirement that is imperative for one’s own sanctification and eternal salvation.
John 6:53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
Whenever we have had communion together, the service has always included reading the passage from John 6:25-58, which describes in great detail the importance of Holy Communion. But just like baptism, people need to understand the magnitude of what they are partaking in. It is Christ Jesus in bodily form on the altar, for it is His body and His blood.
1 Corinthians 11:20-29 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper. For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken. What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not. For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.
Another requirement is to examine yourself before you partake of the sacrifice of Christ Jesus, remembering that He died on the cross for the purpose of putting away our sins. Anything in your heart that is contrary to the will of God needs to be confessed, not only to God but to others in the church that you have wronged.
James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Reconciliation with others is commanded in the scriptures. Jesus taught that if people were not going to repent towards others that they had sinned against, then they were to be treated like a heathen. This is because they are in a state of impenitence, which will ultimately result in damnation. Partaking of communion in this manner is religious hypocrisy, because if someone cannot repent towards a brother whom they have seen, they cannot possibly repent toward God whom they have not seen. Sins must be washed away by partaking of Holy Communion. When people wrong others in the church and they repent of what they have done, both the offender and the offended must have Holy Communion together, reconciling with each other, and washing their sins away in the blood of the Lamb. When taken off properly, Holy Communion is a humble process of showing God that we are repentant for our wrongdoings, coupled with the desire to obey His will. In order for our sins to be washed away in the blood of Christ, we must humbly admit them and then walk in the light.
1 John 1:6-7 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
Partaking of Holy Communion should be a moment of great contrition, as one seeks the mercy of God. But the Apostle James warned the church about their lack of sincere humility.
James 4:6-10 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
If you were to combine together all of the riches that are found in this world, none of them could ever compare to the treasure that we have in the sacrifice of Christ Jesus. It is only through the blood that He shed at the cross that any of us could have the opportunity to enter into eternal life. He provides us with the grace that we need so that we can go on to perfection, washing away our sins in his very own blood. Of all the people I have ever cared about in my life, this is the greatest example of love that I have ever known.
Hebrews 13:20-21 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
The sacrifice of Christ Jesus is a Divine treasure beyond compare. When we repent of our sins and humbly confess our faults, we can wash them all away through God’s everlasting gift of….
…….Holy Communion
