Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
When I was in high school, math was never my strong point, and I only got through algebra by the skin of my teeth, and through the kindness of a merciful teacher. Recently, I have read some astounding figures about the size of this nation’s debt. If I’m reading this correctly, many people have claimed that this country is 36 trillion dollars in the hole! That is an incredibly big number, with 12 zeros attached to the end. If my math is right, this would require somewhere in the neighborhood of $1 billion dollars every single day for the next 100 years to completely pay off the debt.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Many nations have accrued huge financial debts, and are facing great difficulty trying to dig themselves out. But across this entire world, people are in a far greater debt, and unless it’s paid off, the consequences are going to be severe. Each of us are in debt that is caused by our own sinfulness, and unless they are repented of, they will continue to add up. Like interest rates that are compounded daily, the longer that they are ignored, the greater the debt will become, stockpiling the vengeance of a merciful God, and provoking Him to eternal wrath.
Romans 2:5-11 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: For there is no respect of persons with God.
Most people who have ever had a credit card understand that they need to keep paying on the debt each month so it doesn’t get out of hand. The longer that you wait, the more that you are going to owe. Many financial institutions will refer to this as compound interest on a debt. This means that the interest charged on a loan is calculated not only on the original amount of money that you borrowed, but also on any accumulated interest from previous periods. Any unpaid interest that you owe is simply added to the total amount that is owed and recalculated, and if it’s not taken care of quickly, it can get completely out of control. Each day that people refuse to repent, towards God, or a brother whom they have wronged, the more that they are continuing to store up God’s wrath. Each day that passes is like adding more fuel to the fire, and kindling His righteous anger. The Lord can take the life of anyone He wants, anytime that He desires, and when people refuse to repent of their deeds, their days here on Earth can certainly be shortened.
Revelation 3:3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
The Lord Jesus extends to us the incredible riches of His grace when He laid down His own life for our sins at the cross, but as I have always said, He gives us Grace for a purpose. His Divine clemency is supposed to cause a change in somebody’s life, resulting in becoming a new creature in Christ Jesus.
2 Corinthians 6:1 We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.
Becoming a Christian is more than what you claim with your lips, it is about living for Christ. It’s about turning away from your sinful past, and doing works that show God that you are truly repentant in your heart.
Acts 26:19-20 Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.
As we draw nearer to the return of Jesus, many false forms of Christianity will steadily grow, led by false prophets who are seducing and deceiving others. The Lord Jesus warned that this was going to happen, as did the Apostle Paul.
2 Corinthians 11:13-15 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
These same people are contentious with scriptural truth, and rather than walking in loving obedience to the will of God, they will do exactly what they want to instead. Many of them claim to be in Christ, but they have never really known Him at all.
Titus 1:16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
They deny the power of God by rebelling against the teachings of God.
2 Timothy 3:5-9 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as their’s also was.
There are many people who claim to be a Christian who are very contentious towards biblical truth. Rather than repenting from dead works and going on to perfection, they won’t submit to the will of God. But just like a dad punishing a disobedient child, God will do the same by pouring out His indignation upon those who choose to walk on the path of rebellion.
Galatians 6:7-8 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
Unless people repent of their deeds, the consequences for their sins are going to quickly accrue, increasing every single day just like a mismanaged bank loan. God will reward everyone according to their works, and those who choose the path of impenitence are only storing up God’s wrath, just like the increasing tally of……
