Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
When I was in elementary school, I wasn’t very strong physically, and really didn’t involve myself very much in sports or things of that matter. But during lunchtime, on a nice sunny winter day, I would go out onto the playground and sit down by the monstrous snowbank that had been heaped up by the city plow. Like observing an active battlefield in the dead of winter, I would watch as a large group of children played King of hill. The whole purpose of this game was to try to stay on top, but many of the older students towered over the younger ones in sheer size. But sometimes you could watch and see a few of the young students stand up against the older ones. They really didn’t look very strong physically because of their small stature, but like David against Goliath they would hold their ground on top of the hill, and cast the older students down to the ground.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Although we are not engaged in a physical battle here upon the Earth, we must be strong enough in our faith that we are capable of casting down those who are in direct opposition to the teachings of Christ. Some people will try to exalt themselves over the knowledge of God, but they must be completely resisted, by standing upon the foundation of scripture, and tossing them and their pride, right off the hill.
2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
There is a battle that is raging across the entire world today, and just like any battle, you are going to have two opposing sides. But just like soldiers who can be readily identified by the uniforms of their specific country, it’s quite easy to discern who is for God,…and who is against Him. It all comes down to their response to the teachings of Christ, because they will either submit to it, or they will fight against it. The Apostle Paul was a soldier for Christ Jesus, and when people resisted the teachings of scripture, he would stand his ground and fight for the Truth.
Ephesians 6:10-17 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
We do not fight with earthly weapons, but carry the Spiritual Sword of God’s Holy Word into battle. It is the greatest weapon that has ever been created, and will defeat every skirmish that is waged against it.
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
When people rise up and fight against the teachings of scripture, they are engaging in a war against God, one that they will surely lose in the end. All the words that have ever been written on this Earth will eventually pass away, but the teachings of Holy Scripture are immortal.
Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
1 Peter 1:25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.
The harder that people resist God, the harder they are gonna fall.
Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
Pride is one of the most destructive forces that you are going to find in this world, and just like an apple tree produces an apple, pride will produce the evil fruit of rebellion, resistance, and open disobedience toward the will of God. The Apostles and disciples of the Lord would run into this type of opposition all of the time, but never ceased to speak out against it.
Mark 8:38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
Even through times of suffering, the disciples continued to stand up for the truth, even in the midst of great contention.
1 Thessalonians 2:2 But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention.
Remember that the devil has been exalting himself over the knowledge of God ever since the garden of Eden, and will continue to do so right up until the very end.
2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
But those who try to exalt themselves against the Word of God, will be abased, and clothed in everlasting shame.
Luke 14:11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
These were the same type of people who Jesus warned in Capernaum.
Luke 10:15 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.
Every soul that has ever lived will have to stand in judgment before the Lord Jesus Christ, and every knee will have to bow in His presence. Those who choose to make the fateful error of exalting themselves against scripture, will quickly find themselves cast to the ground, so just make sure that you remember that, the next time you decide to play…..
