Domino’s

Good morning and welcome in.everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

When I was a young child, we used to have bucketfuls of dominoes that were stored in the hallway closet. Although we didn’t actually play the game of dominoes, we would pull them out and begin standing them up on end, making long lines throughout the house. Sometimes these trails got extremely big, and if you weren’t careful, one of your feet would accidentally touch some of them, and all of the work that you had done would come tumbling down to the ground.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Many people are going to make an attempt at the Christian Life, but sadly some of them are going to come up short. Because they didn’t build upon the foundation of Scripture, all of the works that they ever did will come tumbling to the ground.

Matthew 7:24-27 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

A lot of building contractors understand that if you’re going to go through the effort of building a brand new building, the foundation that it is built upon must be capable of withstanding the test of time. It must be unmovable and able to resist the strongest winds and the heaviest burdens that are placed upon it. Each of us is like a little house, one that encloses the individual soul, but many of these homes are not going to last until judgment Day, and will come tumbling down to the ground. This is because they will build their lives upon the shifting sands of the ideologies and philosophies of this world, rather than the everlasting Word of God.

To build our house upon the rock of God’s Word, is to live our lives in obedience to the teachings of Christ, which is a personal and individual decision that each of us must make on our own. But a lot of the time when you decide to follow the Lord, you will have to stand alone. Scriptures are clear that there will be many people in your own household that will reject the will of God, and walk off on the faith that has been instilled in them. This includes a wife, your children, and even your own blood relatives, which is one of the reasons why the Lord Jesus must be first in our lives, and above any other relationships in this world. Like the days of Noah, we are surrounded by an ocean of sin, but we must be tied up securely to the dock of scriptural truth. We must be firm and unmovable in our faith, just like men of God such as John the Baptist.

Matthew 11:7-9 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.

When we build our lives on the teachings of scripture, God is going to bless that. We will certainly have to endure sufferings and persecutions for the faith, but God will reward you for your perseverance. Like an unmovable giant sequoia tree, we must be well rooted in the teachings of our faith, and built upon the everlasting foundation of scriptural Truth.

Colossians 2:6-10 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

Many people are going to build their lives upon the things of this world, completely focused on temporal concerns, rather than eternal ones. For example, some of them will invest all of their time and efforts into building a huge mansion, only to have it swept away in a flood. We are passing through a temporal world, one that is not going to last. All of the things that any of us could ever attain on the Earth will eventually be burned up by God, so what’s the point of wasting one’s life building upon an earthly foundation?

2 Peter 3:10-12 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

Ever since our youth we have looked at people around us as role models on how to live our lives. Many of them will try to point you in a certain direction and give you advice on what you should do in the future. But people can waste many years of their life trying to attain the American dream, but it is only a distraction of what’s really important in one’s life. All of the possessions, the buildings, and kingdoms of this world are going to perish, but those who build their lives upon the foundation of scripture, are building upon something that will never fade away.

1 Corinthians 3:9-11 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Remember that many people who profess to be Christian are not going to have what it takes to enter into heaven. This is because they never truly repented and submitted themselves to the teachings of scripture.

Matthew 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

So be forwarned that many people who profess to follow the Lord are not going to keep their feet firmly planted in the foundations of Scripture, and will be cast away from God’s presence forever. Because of their refusal to repent by submitting to the truth, all of the works that they ever did are going to come tumbling down, just like another long line of….
