Mach 1

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

Back in the fall of 1947, Captain Chuck Yeager became the very first person to break the sound barrier, which is a speed of 760 miles per hour. He was piloting the Bell X-1 aircraft, which was a special rocket powered plane that was designed specifically for supersonic flight. At 25,000 ft somewhere over the Mojave desert in California, the X-1 was released from the bomb bay of a B-29 bomber, and then rocketed to a testing altitude of 45,000 ft where it became the first plane in history to break the speed of sound. But before accomplishing this feat, there were many long-held beliefs that there was some kind of physical sonic wall that would prevent the aircraft from going beyond it. Others believed that it was impossible to do, and would tear the aircraft into shreds because of the shock waves, leading to structural failure and complete loss of control. Many people worried that the pilot might experience incredible g-forces that would result in their incapacitation to pilot the aircraft. But all their worries were laid to rest that day, when he pushed past the sound barrier and went even further, attaining a final speed of Mach 1.07

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Overcoming the sound barrier was thought by many people as a boundary that was impossible to overcome, but eventually they achieved their goal. If we want to enter into eternal life, each of us will need to do the same thing by overcoming the sinful desires of the carnal nature. But in our flesh, it is impossible to do on our own, but through faith in Christ Jesus, the things that are impossible with men become possible with God. The Lord grants us the power of the Holy Spirit, so that we can overcome all of the sinful limitations of man, and finally break free from the boundaries of sin that have held each of us captive.

Matthew 19:26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

Many years ago I was working on a dock and was trying to loosen up a nut on a huge bolt that had become rusted into place. I tried all kinds of different tools, including some deep sockets, a pipe wrench, and eventually began hitting on it with a large sledgehammer, but it would not budge an inch. So when all of my attempts failed miserably, I warmed up my torch and swiftly cut the nut off the bolt, and before I knew it, I had pounded the bolt completely out of the pipe. Sin is like a rusted bolt inside of our hearts, and in order to remove it completely, it’s going to require faith and the power of the Holy Spirit to free us from its grasp.

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you:………

In order to receive the Holy Spirit, we must become born again through faith in Christ Jesus, and the teachings of the incorruptible Word of God.

1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

We need to be born again in the Spirit, not only to defeat sin, but to eventually enter into God’s eternal Kingdom.

John 3:3-7 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

To overcome means to conquer, defeat, or to prevail over something. For those who want eternal life, we must overcome sin, and in order for this to happen, requires walking each day in submission to the teachings of the Holy Spirit found throughout God’s Holy Word.

Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

1 John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

When we become filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, we will have a renewed mind, which is capable of becoming pleasing unto God.

Romans 8:5-9 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

God is capable of bringing all things to pass in our life, but it requires humble submission to His will. You must remember that the Holy Spirit is given to those who obey.

Acts 5:32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

We must go through a complete transformation from sinners into Saints, which is going to require an obedient heart towards God. We must yield ourselves to His will, and completely reject the sinful deeds of the flesh.

Romans 6:12-13 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

The things that are impossible with men are possible with God, and each of us can overcome sin, but it requires faith in Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit. With God’s help, and a faithful and obedient heart, we can achieve things that we could never do on our own. We can rocket past the shackles of our own sinful nature, and eventually accelerate past the boundaries, of…..
