Sanctified through the Truth

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from The Book of John.

John 17:17  Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

In order for any of us to enter into eternal life, we must become sanctified inside of our hearts. To sanctify means to purify from sin. Each of us are sinners who have come short of the glory of God, and we must purify ourselves by turning away from sinful living and walk on the narrow path of Christ. This purification process begins when we believe in the teachings of scripture enough, that it results in a complete change in the way that we live our lives. The Christian life is more than just hearing God’s Word, because it will require faithfully putting it into practice each day of our lives. When we commit ourselves to humbly walking according to His will, God will bless us because of it.

James 1:21-25 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

In order to be purified from sin, we must first accept the error of our way. Sin is very deceitful, and it can trick you into believing that you are doing the right thing, but it is actually outside the will of God. Holy Scripture has been given to us to correct us and lead us in the right direction.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Since our birth, each of us have been enslaved to our sinful condition, but because of what Jesus did for us on the cross, we have a new opportunity to do what is right with our lives. Men of God have preached the message of repentance for thousands of years, attempting to get people to turn from the darkness to the light. Sin can be defeated, and the shackles of sin can be cut away, but we must walk according to the truth and with the power of faith in Christ Jesus.

John 8:31-36 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

Our hearts must be filled with a fervent desire to want to please the Lord in everything. After all, He loved us so much that He laid down His own life for us on the cross. Out of love for the one who first loved us, we must cast off the works of darkness and walk in the light. Rather than constantly repenting from dead works over and over again, we must move on to perfection and learn to go and sin no more.

1 John 3:3-5 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

That old sinful creature inside each one of us has to be put to death, and a new creature needs to emerge.

Galatians 5:24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Colossians 3:9-10 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

Once again, sanctification is a process of purification from sin, and it begins by turning away from earthly lusts and desires, and ridding them from our lives.

Romans 8:12-14 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

In order to be transformed from sinners into Saints, we must be reborn through the knowledge of God’s will.

1 Peter 1:22-23 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

Those who truly have faith are going to trust in the teachings of scripture, because when they do, it will cause them to repent of their deeds and humbly submit to God. Without genuine faith, it is impossible to please Him.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

We can overcome all things when we believe in God’s Word.

2 Thessalonians 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

Paradise is going to be a perfect and Holy place, and we must prepare ourselves right now for what is coming in the future. We need to cast off all of the works of darkness and purify ourselves from sin, and become……
