The Love of Money

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from The Book of Matthew.

Matthew 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

In order to have spiritual fruit someday, it’s going to require the dedication of your time, but for a lot of people, they just don’t have any available. This is because their hearts are completely focused on obtaining Earthy things instead. Some people are going to live the Christian Life for a period of time, but then fall away from their faith because of this very reason. This is exactly what happened to Judas who loved money more than the Lord Jesus. Some people will get so involved chasing after the things of this world, that they will simply drift off and completely shipwreck their faith.

Luke 8:14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.

When something is choked, it is starved from the life giving oxygen that it needs in order to survive. God’s Word is the Spiritual oxygen that we need in order to run a successful Christian race, but it is chasing after the things of this world that can prevent that from happening. How can somebody finish a marathon, if they choose to stop halfway through and go shopping instead? The only way to complete the race is by continuing to run, and not allow oneself to become sidetracked by all the distractions around us.

Luke 16:13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

There are all kinds of things in this world that can take one’s attention off of fulfilling the high calling of God, and one of the worst of them is the love of money. When you are financially stable and have the things that you need, but you can’t reach out to help a poor person, it only proves what you really love in your heart.

Matthew 19:16-30 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,

Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?

Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved? But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore? And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life. But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.

Some people have so much money they don’t even know what to do with it all, and then waste it on things that are completely unimportant. This will only lead to fruitlessness in the Christian Life.

James 5:1-6  Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you.

Some people will never be able to find a place of satisfaction in this world, because they have never really learned to be content with the simple things in life.

1 Timothy 6:6-10 But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Remember that the scriptures teach that this world and everything in it will eventually be burned up by God, so what shall a man give an exchange for his soul? Love for the things of the world only pulls you away from a close and faithful relationship with the Lord Jesus.

1 John 2:15-17 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Some people are going to come up short of eternal life, simply because they have succumbed to…..
