The Gimbal Stove

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

Many years ago, a man who had joined the Navy told me that he had learned how to bowl while he was in the service. But he didn’t have to go to some bowling alley in a foreign port. This is because the ship he was stationed on had a single lane bowling alley that was located below deck. He told me that they had many hours of fun, but the only problem was that when the weather got kind of rough, they had to toss the ball at the right time, otherwise it would slide right into the gutter. The rolling action of a vessel can also cause great problems, especially for the cook down in the kitchen. Luckily enough, someone created a gimbal stove which is a special marine stove that is designed with a pivoting support that swings with the motion of the ship. This allows it to remain level through the heaviest seas, which is essential for safe cooking, preventing boiling water from spilling, or large pots of soup from being tossed off of the stove.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

No matter how much a ship is tossed to and fro, a gimbal stove will continue to remain level, which is how we need to be in regards to the teachings of our faith. To waver means to go back and forth between two opinions or courses of action. It is to be indecisive, and to fluctuate in one’s opinion allegiance or direction. Our feet must be firmly planted in the unmovable teachings of God’s Word, and just like a gimbal stove, we must not allow our beliefs to be swayed from side to side.

Ephesians 4:14-15 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

When young children begin learning how to walk, they will toddle along in short and unsteady steps, wobbling back and forth as they go. But as they mature, the stronger and straighter their walk will become. We too are supposed to grow up in our faith, getting to the point that we are no longer tossed to and fro with all of the ideologies and false teachings of this world. Our feet must be firmly planted in scriptural truth, and rock solid in our faith and our beliefs.

Colossians 2:6-9 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

John the Baptist was a man who was unmovable in his faith.

Matthew 11:7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

Like wind pushing around a leaf in different directions, we cannot allow ourselves to be carried around by false teachings.

Hebrews 13:9 Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines.

To obtain eternal life, we need to become humbly obedient to the teachings of Holy Scripture, but just like in the garden of Eden, the devil is continuing to lead people into direct disobedience towards God. Many people are following blindly after them, but we must be wise enough in our faith not to be deceived with them.

Romans 16:17-19 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.

The devil is a deceiver, and will ultimately try to twist scripture in a manner to cause you to stumble into disobedience towards God. The great masses of people are going to follow after them, because they guarantee people a place in heaven, and then skip over the message of obedience and repentance towards God. Their main goal is to keep people in the seats so the money keeps flowing in. They promote unity for this very reason, but it’s not a unity based on the doctrines of our faith. Get ready people, because the seas are going to get rough out there as we near the return of our Lord Jesus. It’s not going to get better, it’s going to get a whole lot worse!

2 Timothy 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

2 Peter 2:1-3 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

Young children can be manipulated and led off in the wrong direction, simply because of their lack of education. This is no different than a child of God, who must grow up and become wise in the teachings of scripture. You must become mature enough in the doctrines of our faith that you can discern both good and evil.

Hebrews 5:12-14 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

1 Corinthians 14:20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.

We must grow stronger each day in the wisdom of God’s Word, so that when the storms of false teachings begin rocking the ship, we are sound in judgment and level-headed in our faith, just like,……
