The Widowmaker

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

Around twenty years ago I was cutting down a big tree that was approximately eighteen inches in diameter. After studying it for a minute, I reached down for my chainsaw and pulled on the ripcord a few times until it finally roared to life. I always look above me as I work, but I had just begun cutting the wedge into the tree, and it was only a few seconds later when a huge branch about four inches in diameter hit the ground an arm’s length away from where I was standing. It was completely dead, and had broken off from the heavy vibration of the chainsaw. I have felled thousands of trees during my lifetime, but this is an activity that can be dangerous and unpredictable, and if it had hit me it would have done some serious damage. This is the reason why they are aptly called a widowmaker which is a dead tree or tree limbs that fall down upon somebody. I normally don’t go to work out in the woods on a windy day because even a light breeze can cause a weak tree to come crashing down upon you, and you really have no time to react at all. But after looking at that twenty foot limb laying on the ground, I knew that the Lord had protected me that day, and had completely delivered me from harm.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

This world is filled with wickedness and hidden dangers lurking all around us, but when we serve and obey God from the heart, He can protect us from harm and deliver us from the hand of the enemy. He can save us from any danger, just as he saved me from the path of the Widowmaker.

Psalms 18:2  The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

There is nothing in this life that happens without God’s intervention, as He will raise up one person, and then cast down another. He will exalt the humble, but then thrust the proud into hell. He will lift up the righteous, and then punish the wicked. The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away, and by His right hand He can bring forth life, and with the other hand, He can bring forth death. He can grant somebody eternal life, or send them to an eternal lake of fire. Our precious Lord is a God to be greatly feared, because He can save sinners, or punish and completely destroy them. We must fear and obey the Lord, trusting in His hand for our deliverance and protection, because when we do, it will not be by the hand of men that we are delivered, but by the hand of the Almighty God.

Exodus 14:21-31 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians, And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth for them against the Egyptians. And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.

And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them. But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore. And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.

Obedience to the Lord Jesus brings forth His Divine favor and protections, and we must learn to please Him in everything, just as a loyal wife serves her own husband. When we do what is right, we are going to reap the benefits of His shelter, His safekeeping, and His mighty deliverance.

Jeremiah 15:20-21 And I will make thee unto this people a fenced brasen wall: and they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith the LORD. And I will deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem thee out of the hand of the terrible.

Those who trust in the Lord will walk according to His will, and He will deliver them from the calamity that comes upon the heads of the wicked.

Psalms 37:39-40 But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble. And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.

In the name of the Lord, Egypt’s army was destroyed in the Red Sea. In the name of the Lord, Goliath was fed to the beasts and fowls of the Earth. The Saints of God are endured with His power, and by His strength the wicked will be vanquished.

1 Samuel 17:47 And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our hands.

Psalms 118:8-11 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes. All nations compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD will I destroy them. They compassed me about; yea, they compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.

We are passing through an age of perilous times, where the fear of God is being quickly depleted upon this Earth. But those who hold Him in a place of reverence will be delivered from the plagues, pestilence and punishments that are going to come upon the heads of the wicked. He’s a protector of the righteous, and a bulwark for the obedient; protecting us from all harm, and out of the reach of……
