Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
Around thirty years ago, I had a nice little Ford Bronco 2 that I used most of the time for work. I put a lot of highway miles on that vehicle because I traveled long distances to get to my jobs, but sometimes I would have to drive down a backroad that I had never been on before. One time I was on a gravel road that had become flooded because of all of the recent rain in that area. I didn’t consider it anything out of the ordinary and continued to drive down the road, but before I knew it, I was buried right up to the fender wells in mud. I didn’t expect the puddle to be that deep, and no matter what I did, even using four wheel drive, I wasn’t going anywhere. All I could do was climb out of the window of the truck, and wade slowly through the thick mud that was over two deep.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Appearances can be very deceiving, and I didn’t expect that puddle to be that deep, but this is why we must always exercise caution in whatever we do in life. Sin can creep into somebody’s life in the very same manner. As we walk through this world, there are many people who don’t really think very much about the path that is directly in front of them. Just like driving a vehicle, sometimes people will not pay attention, and become fixated on their surroundings instead, such as watching the native wildlife or staring at the bright colors of the autumn leaves, When they get distracted in such a manner, sin can grab a hold of them and before they know it, it can pull them right down into the mud. When people are not paying attention to the narrow road of Christ Jesus, they can become quickly ensnared in sin, only to find themselves buried in the mud and two feet deep.
Ephesians 5:15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
In order to be circumspect we must be cautious and careful to consider any consequences for the actions that we are going to take. That day out on that wet road, I really wasn’t very concerned about what I was driving through, and didn’t even consider testing the waters first, but this is one of the problems that causes people to greatly err in the Christian Life. Although the road looked good enough to drive on, we must not judge by appearances only, but all of us must take great heed to watch the road in front of them, lest he find himself ensnared in the mud.
2 Peter 3:17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
That day on that back road I wasn’t really too concerned about what I was driving through, but we are never supposed to judge by appearances. A puddle might appear shallow, but might actually be two feet deep in reality. As recently as last summer we were driving the pickup out on a forestry trail to get some pine cones for the state nursery. As we finished up, we realized that unless we crossed over a small stretch of water we would have to double back approximately half an hour in order to get all the way back home. But even though we checked to see that it was shallow enough to cross, the riverbed was not strong enough to support the weight of the truck, and before we knew it, we were buried in mud.
Each of us are constantly learning everyday of our lives. Things can appear safe, but before you know it, the actions that you take can pull you right down in the mud. Those who have ears to hear, let them hear. There is nothing more deceiving in this world than the treachery and deceitfulness of sin. It can convince somebody that what they are doing is acceptable, while at the same time, it is completely contrary to the will of God. When you are deceived you believe something is true, but in all reality it’s a lie. The devil is a master deceiver, and has been trying to lead people away from the will of God for thousands of years. He will actually try to convince people not to be concerned about the path in front of them, and try to distract them in some manner. True men of God will rebuke and reprove you because they want you to turn from your sins and walk in the will of God. The devil on the other hand could care less, and is a backslidden, disobedient wretch. The only thing he’s worth is feeding more fuel to the lake of fire, where all of them will suffer forever in a lake of fire that can never be quenched.
Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
Sometimes when we walk out into the snow, it can be deeper than it looks. Sometimes the ice will freeze the snow on top, and we might walk across it for a period of time and, but then suddenly fall through. Sin can deceive us, which is why the Apostles warned the church over and over again to not allow their hearts to be deceived by it.
Hebrews 3:13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
If we are truly going to be circumspect, you are going to be on your guard and very cautious at all times, a caveat that is provoked by the teachings of scriptural truth. The devil is a master deceiver, which is why we need to be followers of the Master of Truth.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Sometimes when we were children we would play out in the playground, only two return home with our clothes filled up with dirt. Sometimes as adults, people go out four-wheeling, only to return home filthy and muddy. But as a Christian, if we want to get back home, we need to keep ourselves clean from the filth of this world and the mud of sinful living. We must consider each day the consequences for the things that we do, because the choices that you make will ultimately result in your own salvation, or becoming buried in mud,…..
