Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.
When we were very young, a lot of us might remember our very first bicycle. Although we were very excited to get on the bike and take a ride down the street, it takes quite a while to learn how to keep our balance, and many times almost immediately, we fall down. But back in 1949, there was a little invention that was introduced by the huffy company, consisting of two wheels that were mounted on the back frame of a bicycle. They were called training wheels, and would keep the rider from toppling off their bike as they pedaled down the sidewalk. They could be set in different positions and heights depending on the needs of the cyclist. Just like mounting outriggers on a canoe, they would provide stability for the rider, and prevent them from tipping over and falling down
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Like training wheels, God has created something to help keep us upright, it’s the teachings of Holy Scripture. When we first become a Christian, we must become children all over again, and we need to go through Spiritual training which is gained through the knowledge of God’s Holy Word. When we abide in the teachings of Christ and apply them to our lives, God can keep us from falling, just as long as we always remember to put on our training wheels.
2 Peter 1:10-11 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Sometimes when young children learn how to walk for the first time, they trip or fall over. When a gymnast is practicing a vault, sometimes they will put down a lot of padding to keep them from getting hurt. Well the same thing is true of our walk with God. Abiding and submitting to the teachings of scripture can prevent us from being hurt by the second death. Like a safety net that is provided for a tightrope walker, our safety net is being faithfully obedient to the will of God.
Revelation 2:11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
God grants us forgiveness through the blood of Christ, but it is for a purpose. If people never truly repent of what they are doing, then it really doesn’t matter if they call themselves a Christian or not. To inherit eternal life, we must overcome sin, and like children learning to ride a bike, we must learn to walk in the high calling of God, and move on unto perfection.
Hebrews 6:1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
As a child steadily learns how to ride a bike, eventually the training wheels won’t even touch the ground. They might be able to get a long way like that, but then one of them will glance off the sidewalk, and in the split second it will correct their balance so they can continue upright as they travel further down the road. Well, that’s exactly what Holy Scriptures do in our lives, correcting us as needed so that we can mature in our faith and walk perfectly, in the high calling of God.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
To be good at anything in life, it’s going to require practice and training. The church is very much like a Spiritual gymnasium, where we must undergo the process of being trained in our faith by men of God. They can be readily found throughout the teachings of scripture, who coach, encourage, reprove, warn and sharply rebuke the church as needed.
2 Timothy 4:1-2 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
Titus 1:13 This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;
Remember that women are forbidden from teaching anything, especially scripture. This is a role that is meant for men alone, which is why Jesus never picked any women Apostles. Even in the home, the dad is the one who is responsible to bring up his own children in the ways of Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Deuteronomy 6:7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
Abraham trained his family.
Genesis 18:19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
A wife must never usurp her husband’s Spiritual leadership in the home, because it is his responsibility to raise and instruct them in the faith. Those who resist his power and authority will receive damnation.
Romans 13:1-2 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
1 Timothy 2:11-13 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
When we abide in God’s Word and walk according to His will, He can keep us from falling, but we must continue in the faith, repent from dead works, and always remember to put on the……
