The Search for Titanic

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.

Most of us know that the RMS Titanic sank back in 1912 as it was crossing the North Atlantic on its maiden voyage. Weighing in at over 50,000 tons, it was the largest passenger ship of its time, and was capable of carrying over 3,300 people fully loaded. Some sources claim that the ship was only tested for about 6 hours, practicing a few maneuvers, but then quickly put into service. When it collided with the iceberg, it sank in over 12,000 ft of water, approximately 370 nautical miles south southeast of Newfoundland. But for 73 years, countless numbers of people had been involved searching for its wreckage, but many of them failed because they were limited by the lack of adequate technology at the time. In the 1950s, a salvage company from Southampton made an unsuccessful attempt searching for the vessel, and in the 1970s, Jack Grimm and some other associates made another attempt but it ended in failure. In 1973, Robert Ballard had the desire to find the Titanic, and finally in 1985 after exploring other projects for the Navy. His team found a debris field using an unmanned submersible that had been fitted with cameras to identify pieces from the vessel laying on the ocean floor. Like a hunter following the tracks of a wounded animal, the wreckage led them right to the hull of the ship, finding what they had been searching for all along.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

In order to find anything, you will need to seek after it diligently. When you seek something, you will dedicate a lot of your time and efforts trying to find what you want, but obviously not everybody in this world wants the same thing. Up here in our neck of the woods, a lot of people will search diligently for walleye, and spend hours of their day fishing in order to bring some home. Others will spend their days out in the woods gathering mushrooms or berries, trying to find the best ones that they can so they can sell them at the market. There are thousands of things in this world that people will devote their lives trying to obtain, but in the end what matters the most is seeking after the one who can provide us with something that this world can never offer: Eternal life.

Hebrews 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

To seek means to search in an effort to find something. Perhaps you are missing a title for your vehicle, and you spend days on end going through paperwork until you finally locate it. God will reward those who diligently seek Him, which means that you need to possess that same type of attitude towards Spiritual things.

Matthew 7:7-8  Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Wherever Jesus went, the ones who desired to grow in their faith followed hard after Him.

Mark 1:36-37 And Simon and they that were with him followed after him. And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee.

Some people were seeking the Lord so much that they went days without eating just to hear Him preach and be near Him.

Matthew 15:32 Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.

Psalms 9:10 And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

Psalms 105:3-4 Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD. Seek the LORD, and his strength: seek his face evermore.

As I’ve always said, these are some of the most wicked times in history that we are passing through. It is an era that is unlike any other, where many people are seeking after everything else in this world but God. Their hearts have become hardened because of a love for this world rather than a love for the Lord Jesus.

1 John 2:15-17 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Whatever you love most is what you will chase after in this life. Like a treacherous wife who heartlessly departs her husband, many people have done the same thing to our precious Lord Jesus who died on the cross for their sins. Their hearts have turned away from God, seeking after the things of this world, which in the end will only be burned up in fervent heat.

Jeremiah 3:20 Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD.

Amos 5:4 For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:

In order to be rewarded by God, both now and then eternity, we must seek Him with all of our hearts. After all, this is the essence of the first commandment.

Matthew 22:35-38 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.

Jeremiah 29:13  And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

Lamentations 3:25 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.

There are thousands of things in this world that people can go looking for, which only pull people away from a close relationship with the Lord. There are many thorns in the world that must be avoided in order to keep yourself from getting hurt, and to abide forever in the love of God.

Mark 4:18-19 And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

Luke 12:29-31 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Remember that whatever you diligently seek after in this life, is what will become your consuming passion, but be careful about what you spend your life searching for. A lot of the things that we do with our time are simply not going to matter on judgment Day. Today is the day of salvation, and we must redeem the time that we have been given! Today is the day of salvation, for now is our salvation nearer than when we first believed!

To obtain eternal life, we must search diligently for the one who can provide it. You will never find anything in this world that will ever compare to seeking after the eternal things that are found in our precious Lord Jesus, not riches, not rubies, and not even,……
