The Granny Gear

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.

Many years ago there was a man that I knew who was accidentally sideswiped by a grader when he was out working in the woods. I think that the accident scared him a lot, and after that, he really didn’t want to drive his vehicle anymore, so he called me up and asked me if I would get it out of his yard. There was a scrape all the way down the entire driver’s side of the vehicle, and apparently the grader missed his head by just a few feet. I’m not into appearances, so I was planning on driving the truck the way that it was, because he had just rebuilt the motor and the transmission. But, I don’t know if I have ever driven a truck with a granny gear as low as the one that this one had. It would bounce the truck up and down at 2 mph when you drove down the back road. One time, I backed a small camper down a 45° hill to park it in my yard, and when I went to go back up the hill, I slipped it into low gear, and with the power of that tranny, that truck crawled up the steep embankment like it was nothing at all.

This reminds me the Christian Life.

A lot of people like to go to drag races, tractor pulls, and even the Indy 500 because they are impressed by the sheer power of these vehicles. But there is nothing in this world as powerful as a man who is filled with God’s Holy Spirit, because in the name of Christ Jesus, he can cast out devils, he can heal the sick, and he can absolve sinners of all of their sinful deeds.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

When we become a believer in Jesus Christ, we can be filled up with the power of God’s Holy Spirit, and with that power, Jesus taught that those who believe in Him would be able to do the same things that He did.

John 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

The disciples had been given the same abilities as our precious Lord Jesus, through the power of His Holy Spirit.

John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Acts 1:7-8 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Acts 6:8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.

Acts 4:33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

Mark 6:12-13 And they went out, and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.

People were amazed at the power that God had given unto men.

Matthew 9:6-8 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. And he arose, and departed to his house. But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.

Luke 9:38-43 And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child. And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him. And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not. And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither. And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father. And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,

When we are filled up with the Holy Spirit we have the ability to do what is good, rather than what is wrong. God strengthens us with His power in order to fight against sin and all of the works of the devil.

Ephesians 6:10  Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

Ephesians 6:10-11 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

2 Corinthians 6:7 By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left.

Colossians 1:11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

Although men of God are very meek and humble, you certainly don’t want to stir them up to anger. Moses has been called the meekest of all men, but when he came down from the mount, he took the tablets and smashed them on the ground before the people. Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the foal of an ass, but He went into the temple and threw over tables and whipped the people because He was so angry. The Apostle Paul was very lowly, but he was filled up with the power of God.

1 Corinthians 4:18-20 Now some are puffed up, as though I would not come to you. But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will, and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power. For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.

To overcome sin and all the wickedness of this world, we need to be filled up with the power of the Holy Spirit. Just like my old pickup, we will be able to climb every mountain, just as long as we remember to downshift into……
