The Air Hose

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.

There were a group of teenagers who used to spend a lot of their summer riding on bicycles, and because of this, they were constantly filling up their tires and checking the air pressure. They had a big old air compressor out in the garage, and when it was needed, they would plug it into the wall, and the pulley belt would begin churning air into a large storage tank. About 10 minutes later, it would automatically shut off and everyone would grab the 30-ft air hose from off of the wall, and begin filling up their tires. But when they were all done, they were so excited to go biking that they would throw the long air hose in a big heap on the garage floor. When their dad finally got home from work, he would get really upset and command them to go clean up their mess before supper. The teenagers would quickly run back out to the garage, coil up the hose and neatly hang it back up on the wall.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

A dad can be very easy to please when you obey him, and God is the same way. When we submit to Him and obey His teachings, He will bless us because of it. We must prove to the Lord Jesus that we truly love Him, which will only happen when we turn away from the things that He hates, and obey Him from the heart.

John 14:21-24 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

Obedience to those who are your authority is an opportunity to show them how much you love them. When they tell you to jump, you say how high? When they tell you to stand up, you snap to attention. Even in a Christian marriage, the man is the ruler of his house. I’ve always said this before, but there is no equality in the home whatsoever. Children must obey their parents, and the wife must completely submit and obey her husband in everything. A wife proves her love towards her husband by doing the things that he commands her to do, whatever that may be.  He might have specific meals that he wants prepared weekly, or certain things that he wants done around the home. Not every man is the same, but whatever they command you to do, you must obey them in order to be faithful to the gospel of Christ. It is only through obedience to those who are an authority in your life, that you can ever prove that you truly love them. The husband must lead his home in the direction that he wants to take them, and ultimately it is his responsibility to lead them into the teachings of Christ Jesus. As the church submits to the teachings of Christ, the wife is to submit to her husband in everything, because he is the higher power in the home. When the children watch her obedience, they learn obedience, but if chooses to resist him, and even departs his presence, she brings shame upon herself.

Romans 13:1-2  Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

Because of her own impenitence, she can lead the children away, weaken the faith that was instilled in them, and cause them to sin.

Matthew 18:6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Jesus is the head of the church, so when we study and grow in the teachings of scripture, we will learn to do the things that He desires. When we obey Him, it pleases Him. When we were children, a lot of us really didn’t like cutting the lawn, but this is quite possibly something that your dad really enjoyed and appreciated. Sometimes we have to do the things that we don’t want to, in order to satisfy and prove our love towards someone else.

2 Corinthians 8:8  I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love.

1 Thessalonians 5:21  Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

2 Corinthians 13:5  Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves.

I have always said that I had hated the teaching profession, but when I became a baptized believer, I knew that my attitude was going to have to change in order to be faithful to the will of God. Jesus calls out to men to preach, and to be faithful to this command I needed to learn to do the thing I hated, in order to fulfill His purpose for me.

Remember that in our main study verse today Jesus said,……”He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings.” Jesus commanded men to preach God’s Word, but after Peter denied him three times, the Lord basically told him the same thing,…. If you love me, feed my sheep. Peter went on to prove his great love for the Lord, by fulfilling the will of God. Think of the men that the Apostle Paul picked to preach, who never truly loved him or the gospel. They walked off on their duties and completely abandoned him.

Like a wife to her husband, like a child to their dad. Like a soldier to a general, or a student to their teacher; to sincerely love your neighbor as yourself is to obey those who have authority over you, especially those who have educated you in Holy Scripture.

Hebrews 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

So if we truly want to please our precious Lord Jesus, we need to do what He says. Some dads like their garage kept very clean, so if you ever use his tools, make sure that you humbly put them all away. Prove your love for him, and make sure that you never forget to hang up…..
