The Bucket Brigade

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.

For the last 25 years or so, my family has lived in a small little cabin, completely off of the grid. We have never had a telephone pole or even a well, and most of our drinking water has been supplied by a flowing well about ten miles away from our home. Any other type of water has been supplied by our nearby lake or by catching rain from off of out roof. I usually like keeping a couple 55 gallon drums full of water just in case we have a fire. If this was to happen, each of us could grab some buckets to quickly put it out. Bucket brigades have been around for a long time, even during the American civil War when soldiers were called upon to help firefighting efforts in Richmond. They would form a long line from the water source to the fire, and then pass buckets of water to the next person in order to quench the fiery blaze.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Throughout history there have been numerous men who have been filled up with the fire of God’s Holy Spirit, but like a bucket brigade, many people tried to pour water on their fire, trying to prevent them from preaching God’s Holy Word. It happened to Peter, and it happened to the Apostle Paul as people gathered together to raise up persecution against them. It happened to our precious Lord Jesus who was crucified on a cross mercilessly in Jerusalem. Whenever men of God are filled up with the light of God’s truth, the devil will always attempt to put out the fire of the Holy Spirit.

1 Thessalonians 5:19 Quench not the Spirit.

One of the definitions for quench means to extinguish a fire, and it is the devil who wants to put out one’s fire for God. There are many firefighters out in the world today who try to save the lives of others, but the devil is like a wicked firefighter, who is trying to put out the fire of obedience to the will of God. The devil hates the fire of their faith. The devil hates the fire of their submission. The devil hates the fire of their passion for the Lord Jesus. The devil hates the fire of their Godly fear. So what do the devils do? They try to stomp it out. It’s not very difficult to identify the devil because they will try to lead people astray from obedience to the will of God. They will try to turn people away from their faith in the teachings of scripture. Ultimately the devil wants to usurp God, just like a wife who usurps the authority of her own husband. He hates conservative Bible believing God fearing Christians, and will do whatever he can to try to lead them away from God. Like I have always said, the devil will start with your own children, trying to lead them away from the conservative faith that has been established in them. The devil is a liberal piece of dung, filled with a mouth of manure slop and candy-coated lies. He is a wolfy wolf, who leads even precious children away from the will of God. Although he likes putting out the fires of the Holy Spirit, he will not be able to quench the fires of Eternal damnation.

Luke 17:1-2 Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come! It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.

When we become a Christian, we become fired up with a great desire to serve and obey God, but it is the devil who will always try to pour water on that flame. Jesus is filled with that Holy Spirit, and at one time Peter tried to quench what the Lord was doing.

Matthew 16:21-23 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

The devil will try to stop the preaching and publication of God’s Holy Word. At one time, the Apostle Paul was doing the same thing, but he was a complete unbeliever. After his conversion he repented of what he had done, and went out and preached the gospel that he once tried to destroy.

Galatians 1:20-23 Now the things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not..Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia; And was unknown by face unto the churches of Judaea which were in Christ: But they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed.

Acts 26:9-11 I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them. And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities.

When you were in school did you ever have a bully stand in your way, and try to prevent you from opening up your locker? This is the way the devil is, a bully on the exterior, but a sissy in his heart. He tries to wield power that he doesn’t possess. This is why men of God cast the devil out of people, freeing them from the bondage of his lies, and casting him into the animals where he rightly belongs. The devil wants to stop the true teachings of Christ from being published, but thus saith the Lord, it’s high time that these wicked men become blind for a season, in the name of Christ Jesus!

Acts 13:8-12 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith. Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him, And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand. Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.

There are many little devils who have joined hands with others in order to quench the fire of God’s elect, but as many firemen know, there will be some fires that they cannot put out. This is because the heat of the fire is far too hot, and the fuel that is burning cannot be extinguished. All they can do at that point is to let it burn. The devil cannot compete with a spirit-filled man of God, for the eternal light that burns in his heart can never be smothered. Oh the devil may try, and surround himself with all kinds of other people to fight the blaze, but they will never put out the light of a true man of God, no matter how many people are in….
