Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.
During my lifetime I have been around numerous people who were involved in taking care of others such as the handicapped or the elderly, but as soon as they helped tuck them into bed, and were out of their earshot, they would speak evil about the person that they were helping. They were supposed to be care providers but they didn’t care about them at all! This has always infuriated me when people do things for others simply to get a paycheck, but they actually hate the one that they are supposedly helping.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
I sincerely care about others, which is one of the reasons I warn people about wolves in sheep’s clothing. There are many people who are very religious out in the world who are only preaching to receive income. They are false care providers, who only care about making a dollar bill. It’s like a wife who claims that she loves you and will faithfully abide by your side, but in reality, she is a vicious heartless and wicked woman.
1 Corinthians 13:1-13 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
The first commandment is to love God with all of your heart, but a lot of people really don’t love the Lord Jesus, even though many of them claim to profess to believe in Him.
John 8:37-45 I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father. They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham. But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham. Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God. Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
1 Corinthians 16:22 If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha.
Normally when a lot of people read first Corinthians 13, a lot of them will automatically think of their neighbor, or even their spouse. But remember that our first and greatest love has to be God. Our own salvation depends on loving Him obediently with a pure and loving heart
John 14:21-24 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him..He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.
People can love their neighbor and even their own spouse but not enter into heaven. The commandments are in order for a reason.
Matthew 22:35-38 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.
People can be filled with all types of religious activities but still not make it to heaven. This is because they really didn’t love the Lord enough to repent of their own sins.
Matthew 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Although we are supposed to be filled with charity, charity does not trump biblical truth. Repentance is required to get to heaven and if anybody tells you differently they are a liar. Just like a child goes on unto maturity, we must mature in the Christian Life. There is a huge difference between love for Jesus and religion, as the beloved Apostle defines in this chapter today. Like a faithful and obedient wife, what are you willing to do for the Lord Jesus? Will you be the kind of person who is ready to enter the place of perfect loving obedience towards Him? Will you love the Lord Jesus with a faithful heart, possessing an obedient love for Him, where….
