Shaggy Manes

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.

I’ve always taught my children, ever since they were young, to identify and collect mushrooms. Funny enough, I’m the only one in the family who likes to eat them! One of the ones that we collect is an interesting white mushroom with a big shaggy head. It looks like it almost has scales on it, as if to protect it from the elements. They are called Shaggy Manes, and just a few big ones can be a very tasty meal. When you pick them when they are mature, they are white and firm, but if you wait a little too long to clean them, they can slowly turn into a pile of soggy black ink. In fact it’s been claimed by some that people in the past would actually use them for their ink purposes. But like any wild mushroom that you bring home, you need to go through them and clean them. It helps to soak them in some salt water for a little bit and cut off everything that has gone bad. The good stuff will be keep for the supper table, while the bad stuff will be thrown away.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

The same type of thing is going to happen on judgment Day, when the good will be saved, and the bad will be cast away.

Matthew 13:47-51  Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away. So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord.

All of us are sinners who at one time or another, have committed evil acts of iniquity, but this is exactly why we must be converted to Faith in Jesus Christ. He died to forgive us of all of our sins, so that by His grace, we could repent, transform, and bring forth the good works of righteousness.

John 5:28-29  Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

Men of God who are serving Christ Jesus, are referred to as His brothers. The manner in which you treat the brethren of Christ, is going to greatly affect your own Eternal salvation.

Matthew 25:31-46  When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Obviously women cannot preach or teach God’s Word, and this passage is specifically meant about helping the men who are involved with God’s work as a laborer for the Lord. This is exactly what Onesiphorus did for the Apostle Paul.

2 Timothy 1:16-18 The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me. The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

Someday, the sheep are going to be divided from the goats, and the tares will be eternally separated from the wheat.

Matthew 13:24-30  Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

Cleaning mushrooms in the kitchen has always been a simple lesson for me about the teachings of Christ Jesus. The good ones are saved, but the bad ones will be tossed away, just like preparing another big delicious potful, of,…..
