Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.
Many years ago I had to attend a session of summer school, otherwise I would have been held back, and in order to get to class, I had to ride my 10 speed about 35 miles round trip, rain or shine. But as I think back to that time, there were certain days that were a lot tougher than others, because occasionally I had to deal with heavy resistance from a strong head wind. I remember having to deal with a 20mph wind all the way to school, as it constantly pushed against my efforts as I peddled. Sometimes when class finally let out for the day, I figured that I would have an easier trip back home because I would be going with the wind, but during class the wind changed direction and I had to fight it all over again. Sometimes it got so rough that I had to get off my bike and walk, simply because of sheer exhaustion, but after a few minutes I got back on, knowing that I had to get back home no matter how much the wind resisted me.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Sometimes we are going to have to deal with a lot of resistance, especially from those who profess to have faith in Jesus Christ. Rather than humbly submitting to the one who bled and died for their forgiveness, they will be like a strong head wind, and completely resist the truth of Holy Scripture.
2 Timothy 3:8 (KJB) Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.
To resist is to withstand, strive against, or to oppose. It is to fend off the influence of, or refuse to accept and allow oneself to be changed by something. The entire Christian Life is about changing from sinners into Saints, but many people who profess to follow Jesus openly reject the teachings of Christ. Rather than walking in obedience towards His will, they choose to rebel against Him instead.
1 Samuel 15:23 (KJB) For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry……..
Not everybody that professes to be a Christian truly is inside of their hearts, and we can discern who they are because they hear God’s Word, and have a great desire to obey it.
1 John 4:4-6 (KJB) Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
Although the King James Bible is readily available in this period of History, many people including those who profess to be followers of Jesus are turning away from its teachings.
2 Timothy 4:2-4 (KJB) Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
A reprobate is defined as a depraved and wicked person, and without repentance they will become rejected by God and beyond any hope of salvation. This is because rather than abiding in Scripture, they believe lies instead. When people get to this point in their life, they will believe a lie so much that they will actually convince themselves that they are going to be in heaven, but in all reality, they will be thrust down to hell.
2 Thessalonians 2:10-13 (KJB) And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved..And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
Rather than believing in the deceitful philosophy of “once saved always saved”, we need to look inside of our hearts regularly, to make sure that we are abiding in biblical truth.
2 Corinthians 13:5 (KJB) Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
Many people are going to deny the Lord through their disobedient and unfaithful actions. In fact they will believe a lie so much that when somebody speaks the truth of scripture, they will call them an evil person.
2 Peter 2:1-2 (KJV) But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
As I’ve always said, when people turn their ears away from the truth, there is nothing left for them but to believe but a lie instead. At that point, it is a complete rejection of what you know you are supposed to be doing, and doing the complete opposite instead. Judas for example was chosen for ministry, but he turned away from it all because of his love for money. Esau did the same type of thing, but once he did it, he couldn’t get it back.
Hebrews 12:16-17 (KJB) Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
When people cast off their faith in such a manner, even when they were enlightened with the Holy Spirit at one period of time, they will eventually be cast away from God forever.
Hebrews 6:4-8 (KJB) For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God: But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.
So just like Jannes and Jambres, there will be many people who resist the truth and push back against those who preach it. In their rebellion they only prove themselves to be reprobates to the one true faith, as they live their lives contrary to the will of God, and exert strong opposition to the truth, just like,….
