Everlasting Governance

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from 2 Peter.

2 Peter 2:9-10 (KJB) The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished: But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.

The dictionary defines government as the authority that sets forth the rules for society. Many governments differ in how they are set up, because some of them are run by one main authority figure such as a king, while others are governed by elected groups. You don’t have to read very much of the Bible to realize that there have always been many different places of government, from King David, to King Agrippa. Many places of government are found throughout society today, from a City council, to a tribal council, or even a president of a country, along with its state representatives. These are all places of authority that have been created by the Lord Jesus and for His purpose, so to deny government is to deny Christ Jesus.

Colossians 1:16 (KJB)  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

But it’s clear from the teachings of scripture that not everybody will use these places of authority to do justice for others, and many of them were corrected and even censured for their own wicked behavior. For example, John the Baptist rebuked Herod, Jesus rebuked the religious leaders of his day, and even the Apostle Paul fought against wickedness in high places.

Ephesians 6:11-12  Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Jesus spoke about an unjust judge.

Luke 18:2-8 (KJB) Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith.
And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily…….

But there are many people in high places of authority who are actively involved with the wicked works of darkness. They will plant evidence and punish the innocent to cover up their own crimes. They will throw the book at an offender, and then show mercy to their family, friends and relatives who have committed the same crimes. Rather than equal Justice or Mercy, they are the dark works of hypocrisy. But even though there are many places of injustice in this world, the Apostle Paul never despised government. To despise something is to feel contempt or deep repugnance for its function and purpose. Government is a good thing because if there wasn’t any government at all, it would be a place of complete anarchy. True men of God do not despise government, but quite the contrary. They will fight for the furtherance of good government, and speak out against the works of darkness, no matter where they might come from in this world.

Proverbs 29:2 (KJB) When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.

Those who claim to be followers of Christ are never to be involved in rioting and rebellious behavior, no matter how much that we have been wronged. Some innocent people have been falsely accused and sent to prison, but we are not supposed to resist evil, because in the end, you will obtain a better resurrection because of it. Remember that although He is the creator of heaven and Earth, Jesus never resisted Pontius Pilate. He certainly could have, even calling down legions of angels for assistance, but He allowed himself to suffer and die on the cross instead. Whenever we submit ourselves to earthly authorities, no matter how wrong their actions may be that are taken against us, they are the ones who become responsible in the eyes of God from that point on. God sees everything that they do, and if they persist in their unruly behavior, just like the Pharaoh in Egypt, God will destroy them swiftly in His vengeance and fury.

Romans 12:19 (KJB)  Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

Although there are many high places of authority in the world today, there is a high place of authority that is much closer than most people think. A dad has been ordained by God to rule over his household, and those who usurp his leadership and supplant his authority are in active resistance to the governance of Christ Jesus. Those who despise government even when it is a wife who rebels against the authority of her own husband, are going to be damned forever.

Romans 13:1-5 (KJB) Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: for he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

Even in the church, you must obey those who have preached God’s Word to you.

Hebrews 13:7 (KJB)  Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.

Hebrews 13:17 (KJB)  Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

As I’ve taught my children ever since they were very young, you will always have some place of authority to answer to. It might be your dad, it might be the principal at school, or it might be law enforcement, but when we humbly submit to them, we please the Lord Jesus Christ. Those who fight against authority, and even the authoritative teachings of scripture need to be warned.

1 Thessalonians 5:14 (KJB)  Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly,……

Although there are many high places of wickedness in this world, just like Joseph, we must wait patiently for God’s timing and deliverance. Those who abuse their places of Justice are going to meet God’s wrath, and it can come in many different forms, from plagues, sicknesses, and even death. Just as Jezebel was eaten by dogs, those who hate authority are going to suffer and perish. Resist not evil, and humbly obey those who have the rule over you, because the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ is a God of order, authority, and
