Torn to Shreds

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.

A lot of people like to go fishing up here in our neck of the woods, but after they are done for the day and begin pulling their boats out of the lake, a lot of them will put a protective tarp over the top of their fishing vessel. Eventually when they get all of their gear packed up, the entire family will jump into their vehicle and begin the long journey back home. But after a few hours of driving, a lot of people will pull into a gas station to fill up their car and pick up some snacks, but when they walk around the back of the boat, they will quickly discover that they had forgotten to tighten down the straps that were holding the tarp in place. To their dismay they realize that the tarp was completely ruined, because all of the wind out on the highway had ripped it to shreds.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Just like strapping down a tarp on a boat, sometimes people will forget to do certain things, but one thing that you never want to forget about is God, because those who do are eventually going to be torn to shreds.

Psalms 50:22 (KJB)  Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.

When people initially get baptized into the Christian Life, they oftentimes will be very excited about their new opportunity to begin serving the Lord Jesus Christ. In many ways they are like a new bride who just got married, and is filled with a great fervor to serve and obey her husband. But as time passes, they don’t possess that same zeal anymore, and will wander off into the world, departing their spouse, and eventually divorcing him completely. This is extremely wicked and bitter behavior, especially towards a man who has stood by their side for many years. The relationship between a man and his wife is symbolic of the relationship between the church and Christ Jesus, because we are His bride and He is the husband. Just as a wicked wife forgets about her commitments to the covenant of marriage, many people who profess to be Christian are going to forget about their commitments to God. Rather than abiding by His side faithfully, they will get up and completely abandon Him, turning away from His calling and purpose. But just like a man who will not have anything to do with the ex-wife who forsook him, God will not have anything to do with the people who forsake Him.

1 Chronicles 28:9 (KJB)  And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.

Forsake means to desert, to abandon, to depart or withdraw from, which is what happens when people begin to forget about God. When you forget about something, you simply don’t remember the things that you are supposed to be doing, or even the important information that you have been given. Just like having a good friend, we must remember daily to communicate with our precious Lord Jesus and the Spiritual things in the scriptures that He commands us to do.

1 Corinthians 15:1-2 (KJB)  Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

When people forget about God it normally begins in their own personal prayer life, because rather than making time to visit and communicate with Him, they get involved doing other things instead. Forgetting something simply means that it was not important enough to you, to remember.

Hebrews 13:16 (KJB)  But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

Although the Lord has done such great things for us, there will be many people who forget to thank Him and show Him the appreciation that He truly deserves.

Luke 17:12-19 (KJB)  And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us..And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.

Can people forget their car keys when they leave for work in the morning? But they forget to pray and seek the one who can save their souls from hellfire.

Jeremiah 2:32 (KJB)  Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

Psalms 103:2 (KJB)  Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

Your supervisor at work might give you a few things that they must have done sometime during the day, but if you forget, you fail to complete them simply because of your own carelessness. Our own salvation requires our serious attention, and complete remembrance of the things that we have been taught from Holy Scripture. This is so we can become converted to the will of God by becoming a doer of the work, rather than being a forgetful hearer.

James 1:22-25 (KJB)  But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

Disobedience will manifest itself when people forget about God, because they fail to remember that they were cleansed from their past sins

2 Peter 1:9 (KJB)  But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

The further people drift away from God, the less zealous their hearts will become.

Revelation 3:15-16 (KJB) I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

Psalms 9:17 (KJB)  The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.

Remember that The Lord created this entire world and everything in it. He shed His own blood on the cross, so that we could have the opportunity to become a new creature in Christ. He is the source of life and our own salvation, but still, many people will forget about all of His wonderful works. You might forget to pick up some items at the store, you might even forget to pick up your child after school, but I guarantee that you never want to be one of those who forget about God. Those who treat our precious Lord in this manner are just like a tarp that is flapping around in the breeze, because those who abandon Him, will eventually be,……..
