Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from the book of Hebrews.
Hebrews 10:36 (KJB) For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.
God promises to save us, but all throughout the New Testament it teaches us that our salvation is contingent upon certain requirements being met. For example, we must turn away from darkness and walk in the light. We must shun the wicked deeds of the flesh, and bring forth works that are meet for repentance. This simply means that if you were an adulterer, you must learn to become faithful to your spouse. If you used to serve idols, you must now serve Christ. If you were a thief, then you must learn how to give to others.
Luke 19:8-10 (KJB) And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
One of the greatest examples of repentance is seen in the life of the Apostle Paul, who was a man who had once tried to destroy churches, but later went on to start them.
Acts 26:15-20 (KJB) And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.
When we study God’s word, we can find all types of promises from Him, but in order to reap them, we must first submit to His wishes. Consider an employer who promises to pay you a certain amount of money provided that you complete a few weeks of work. The paycheck will be a reward for what you did, but in order to obtain it, you will first have to do what you are told, report daily for duty, and complete the tasks that they give you. After successfully doing the will of your employer, then you can finally obtain their promised reward. Such is the path to eternal life.
Some people will go off to college for 4 years because they want to get a degree from a certain school. Obviously they don’t give them away, because you need to show up for classes, study diligently, and successfully pass all of the courses. They promised you a diploma from the very beginning, and guess what, you did what was necessary to obtain your degree, and you eventually received it!
The point is this. Eternal life is a reward that will be granted to those who have repented of their sins and done the will of God from the heart. Many people may judge God because they look at their own parents who punished them for doing good or they punished them for doing evil, but God is not like that. He also cannot lie. When He says He is going to reward you for submitting to His will, I guarantee you, that He will bless that behavior.
When we decide to diligently seek Him, He is going to reward us! But to obtain the reward you must FIRST seek Him! When we obey the Heavenly Father just like a perfect son, He is going to bless us. But to obtain His blessing, you must FIRST obey Him! When we serve the Lord loyally, like a soldier with an unblemished record, He will lift us up in the sight of our enemies. But to obtain that honor, you must FIRST steer clear of iniquity!
These simple analogies are meant to make you realize that in order to obtain something that has been promised to you, action is required on your part to receive it. These are common sense teachings, but a lot of false Christianity has completely rejected them. They have turned the Christian Life into a do nothing to obtain something type of religion, which is completely backwards from what the Bible actually teaches. It’s like an employee who shows up to work who won’t move a muscle unless you pay them first, and then when you do, they are lazier than when they first came through the front door. Part of this is due to Martin Luther who taught that it was by faith alone that we are saved, which is completely contrary to the teachings of the Apostle James who taught that faith without works is dead (being alone.)
Another point is that in order to enter into a perfect Holy place, we must first overcome the lusts of this world. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the Lord will save the most wretched and wicked of sinners, as long as they
get submerged in the waters of baptism, become obedient to God’s Word, repent from dead works, submit to the will of God, and be completely transformed into a new creature in Christ. Someone who goes through the diligent effort to transform in such a manner, God is going to spare them! This is exactly what the Apostle Paul did in His life as an example to all of us the way that God expects us to live. He was living in complete ignorance as an unbeliever, and was doing many things that were contrary to the will of Christ Jesus. But when He believed in the Lord, his life went through a radical change, from a persecutor of the faith, to a protector of the faith.
To those of you who have never been baptized before, I want to make sure you know that we are given precious promises in the scriptures to assure us that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, just as long as you turn from your sins and do the will of God from your heart. People might be able to fool their neighbors, but you will never be able to fool God, because He knows if what you are doing is sincere or not. If you desire rewards from God, there are plenty of them available, when you learn to humbly obey Him from the heart.
2 Peter 1:4 (KJB) Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
Many false prophets claim that once you become a Christian your salvation can never be lost, which is an absolute lie. It is nonsensical foolishness, spouted from the mouths of the impenitent. Some people are going to come short of paradise, because they never did what was required to obtain God’s promise.
Hebrews 4:1 (KJB) Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
To obtain promises in the New Testament, requires actions on your part. To walk in the true grace of God means to have the appropriate fear and reverence towards Him, that you turn away from disobedience to the light. Only through our works can we prove to God how much that we truly love Him. Walking in perfect obedience to God shows that you are on the path of faith, and striving diligently to obtain,…..
