Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture from the book of Hebrews.
Hebrews 6:10-15 (KJB) For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
First of all, we have the promise of being able to inherit eternal life someday, but it is simply a promise. What I mean by that is, we haven’t inherited anything yet, because we still live on this Earth! We have to be granted entrance into the eternal kingdom of heaven which is going to require evidence that shows that you genuinely repented of your past sins, along with works of love towards God and the Saints that prove that your heart has truly changed.
The only way to show God how much that we truly love Him is through our works. As an ignorant unbeliever, all of us have been filled with the works of darkness and walked according to our sinful nature, but when we are baptized into the faith, our lives must take a completely different direction. We must bring forth the fruits of righteousness and prove to God by our actions that we are truly repentant in our heart.
2 Corinthians 13:5 (KJB) Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves….
We prove ourselves through our deeds.
2 Corinthians 8:8 (KJB) I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love.
Christianity is far more than claiming to believe in Jesus with your lips, it is having the works to back up your confession of faith.
Romans 12:2 (KJB) And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Many people will falsely claim that works are not a part of our own salvation, but that’s because they have no understanding of the teachings of scripture. We are justified by faith but faith is far more than just saying I believe in Jesus. It’s more than believing that He died on the cross for your sins. True faith toward God will result in being filled with works for His namesake, just as the Apostle Paul was. So you see, we are justified by our works, just as Abraham was.
James 2:18-24 (KJB) Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God..Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
Works towards the Saints are extremely important, because without them, people will be cast away from God. Doing works and not doing them will greatly affect the eternal destination of one’s soul, as illustrated in the following parable.
Matthew 25:32-46 (KJB) And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
Many heretics have taught that Faith plus works is not the Christian Life, but this is because they are the children of heretics. Works are the only way to prove to God and others that your faith is sincere and genuine. The Apostle Paul didn’t sit on his hands when he became converted to the faith. His love for Christ Jesus and the mercy that he had received from Him, was working in him mightily! His life was evidence to God and others that his heart had undergone a complete transformation.
In our study verse, the Apostle didn’t want the church to be slothful which means to be extremely lazy in matters concerning their faith. Eternal inheritance is going to be granted to those who strove diligently to serve and obey Christ Jesus. It’ll be given to those who turned from the works of darkness to the works of light! Works are works, whether they be good or evil. You know, most parents don’t give a brand new car to their child until they see what they do with an old beater first. Even in the church you didn’t choose a deacon until his works were first proved! Eternal life is not given to the impenitent and the slothful,…it will be granted to those who have proved themselves worthy to God through their actions and works of faith.
Consider this example for a moment,…
Why would a millionaire grant an inheritance to a son who he knew was the laziest person on the Earth? Even an unbelieving wealthy man in this world understands that you don’t give piles of money to somebody who is not going to further the company that they spent their life building from the ground up. Some children have been born into a life of luxury, assuming that they were going to have it all in the future, but then they were eventually cut out of the will. Do you know why this happened? A lot of times it’s because they felt they had some special privilege simply because they were a blood relative. The truth is they were pampered, spoiled, and lazy, and didn’t have the same work ethic as their own dad. Only by our works can we prove to others the kind of person that we truly are inside of our hearts. The secular world understands this, but huge forms of false Christianity reject this completely! What an amazing lack of faith.
It is by our works that you get on the honor roll at school!
It is by your works that you obtain a diploma from college!
It is by your works that you get a better position in the company.
And it is by our works that we become justified and pleasing unto God.
We must have faith and patience in order to inherit the Everlasting Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ. We must have works that back up our faith, and the patience to continue doing them, because only in doing so will we eventually…….
……..Inherit the Promises
