The Scrap Yard

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

All around this country there are numerous scrap yards that collect all types of different metal for the purposes of recycling, and when you drive through their businesses, you will see many different things that appear usable, but the facts are that they will eventually be loaded onto trucks, and hauled away to be melted down. The metals will be used for new projects, and each of those scrap items will be transformed into something else. For example, the metal from an old tractor might end up being used for culverts. A truckload of old nails might be transformed into stove piping. From old cars to bed frames, all of those items will be transformed into something different in the future.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

In order to enter into eternal life, each of us will need to do the same thing. We need to be born again, and the old sinner that we once were must be destroyed so a new person can be created. Like the heat of a smelter, our hearts must be reforged through faith in Christ Jesus and the teachings of scripture, being transformed into brand new creatures, in order to be used for a completely different purpose

Romans 12:1-2 (KJB)  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Transform has been defined in numerous places as to change in composition or structure; to change in one’s character or appearance; and to change from one thing into another. A woman might take the old scraps of clothing that she has been saving, and transform them into a brand new rag rug. Someone might cut down a tree, and with the use of a chainsaw, transform it into a beautiful piece of art. If you look closely, the process of transformation is all around us, from the darkness of night into the dawn’s morning light, or winter’s bitter cold into the warm breath of spring. God wants us to change too, from a sinner into Saint, but just like changing out a blown engine in a race car, we must change our mind. We have to reject everything that we have learned from this world, in order to fully embrace the teachings of Christ Jesus.

Acts 3:19 (KJB)  Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

Have you ever sat down at the supper table and took a sip from a large glass of water, only to realize that it was really warm? I think a lot of us would get up from our seats, empty the glass into the sink, and then fill it back up with cold water from the tap. Our minds are the same way because ever since our birth, they have been filled up with the teachings and philosophies of this world. When we become a Christian, we must empty out our minds so that they can be refilled with the refreshing teachings of Holy Scripture. It makes sense that if you truly desire to become a new creature in Christ, then it must begin with a new mind.

Ephesians 4:23 (KJB)  And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

In order to truly be born again, it begins by becoming re-educated in the things of God. Ever since we were young, most of us were educated by people who really didn’t believe in the Lord Jesus at all. When we are children, our minds are like soft clay, and educators molded them according to their own thoughts, ideas and opinions. Although a lot of them may have had the best intentions, they were shaping us with corruptible seed. In order to get to heaven we need to be re-educated with the everlasting seed of God’s Holy Word, because unlike the things of this world, His teachings will last forever.

1 Peter 1:22-23 (KJB)  Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

So being born again is more than just having a change of heart, it is about being re-educated with Spiritual things. For example, a young man might work as a mechanic right out of high school, but after the first 5 years he really wants to do something different. Many times they will enroll in a tech school or college to learn a completely different trade. So you see, this is very similar to the Christian Life because he realized that he wanted to change, and then took the steps to learn the knowledge that was available to him so he could become something different. Being born again is more than just having a change of heart by itself. It’s more than just claiming to believe in Jesus. It is learning the things that God wants us to do that are found throughout the teachings of scripture. This is incredibly important because without this type of wisdom, you will never be able to be purified from your sins. Desiring to change and becoming changed are two completely different things! Being born again is not a one-time event, but a daily transformation from the will of men, to the will of God. Don’t get me wrong, there are many smart people in this world, but that doesn’t get us to heaven. We have to become Spiritually smart by becoming wise in the teachings of our faith. We can’t look at the world as a guide to morality because many of the things that they do are forbidden in Scripture. So if we truly desire to live forever in heaven, we must apply ourselves to biblical knowledge, found throughout the everlasting teachings of the King James Bible.

Psalms 90:12 (KJB)  So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

Proverbs 2:1-7 (KJB)  My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.

Like a child that is born from its mother’s womb, we must be reborn from the womb of God. Jesus died on the cross to grant us an incredible Gift of Grace, but it is for the purpose of becoming a new creature in Christ, which will only happen through the process of Spiritual re-education. To become Spiritual creatures we must be educated and fed with Spiritual things! The false teachings, philosophies and ideologies that we have learned from this world will have to be dismissed and melted away, so that we can be re-tooled and used for a completely new purpose.

Not everyone that you meet is the same person that they were in the past, because they are undergoing this type of Spiritual transformation. For those of you who want to be in heaven, we must do the same thing, by changing into something new, just like the rest of the items, out at……
