Kept in the Dark

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that, I wanted to tell you a little story.

Have you ever known people who don’t keep fresh batteries in their flashlight, and when the power suddenly goes out, they are left fumbling around in the dark? Have you ever known someone who burned out a lightbulb in the kitchen, but were too lazy to find another one and kept getting their head? Have you ever known a hunter who forgot to fill up his generator, and then when nightfall approached, he was unable to see what he was doing?

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Some people are going to end up being kept in the dark because rather than being filled up with the light of God’s truth, they will be too lazy to seek after it  For those who want to be in heaven, we must prepare ourselves right now, but just like we learn in the parable of the ten virgins, some people will not seek after Spiritual wisdom until it’s far too late.

Matthew 25:1-13 (KJB)  Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

When someone is kept in the dark, they are completely unaware of something that others have full knowledge of. They are in a state of ignorance and uninformed. Noah was a faithful man who was fully aware of what was going to happen to the world, and while the rest of the world chose to live in their ignorance, the floods quickly came upon them and destroyed them all. It happened so fast that they had no time to repent of their sins, or seek after the knowledge of God. God is in charge of life and death, and with a snap of his fingers He can take anybody whenever He chooses, and just like the foolish virgins, some of them are going to be caught completely unawares. Scripture is very clear that without knowledge, people are going to perish! Sometimes, after having a close brush with death, some people will seek God for a month or two, but then eventually go back to business as usual, but people such as these are not going to be prepared for the terror on judgment Day. Because they have rejected Spiritual Knowledge, they will be rejected by God, cast away into a place of eternal torment, to the sounds of wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Mark 13:37 (KJB)  And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.

Everyday that passes, people have the opportunity to seek the knowledge of God, but for many people, the concerns of this world will take precedence over the things of God. In many ways, they remind me of high school students, who rather than seeking an education, they cut class and go walk around town instead. Some of them will eventually quit school completely and go out and get jobs. When these other things become more important than their education, they obviously are not going to get their diploma. Likewise, we must strive diligently to learn the teachings of our faith, so that through obedience to them, we can be prepared to enter into the kingdom of God. The disciples of the Lord were learning Spiritual things from the Master every single day, and in like manner, each of us must do the same.

John 15:15 (KJB)  Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

The Bereans were searching the Scriptures daily!

Acts 17:10-11 (KJB)  And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

The Apostle Paul didn’t want the church people to be kept in the dark, and was constantly filling them with Spiritual knowledge.

Acts 20:20-21 (KJB)  And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house, Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

As children grow into adults, knowledge is very important because it helps us to be prepared for life. Abiding in ignorance does nothing for you, it only hurts you. Our own salvation depends upon growing in the knowledge of God, something that the Apostles wanted for the church.

Colossians 1:9-10 (KJB)  For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

Even as the men of the church grew in knowledge, they would help each other to become wise in the teachings of our faith.

Romans 15:14 (KJB)  And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.

Colossians 3:16 (KJB)  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

James 1:5 (KJB)  If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

God’s Word is a well that is filled up with Spiritual knowledge, but just like the foolish virgins, some people will neglect to fill up their vessels until it’s too late to do anything about it. If you want to be filled with the wisdom of God, you must first seek it, and if people are too lazy to put forth that diligent effort, then you can know for certain that they will always be……
