Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.
We have always had a lot of chipmunks in our backyard, and occasionally you can sit down in a chair and feed them right from your hand. What is really remarkable is how much food that they can actually stuff into their little cheeks. In fact, there are many sources that tend to agree that their cheek pouches can stretch up to three times the size of their head! That would be comparable to sticking a baseball into your cat’s mouth! As they run around the woods, their cheeks serve as a backpack that helps them to bring home lots of food to store away in their burrow. Sometimes, when we pick pine cones for the state nursery, we have found huge piles of cones that these little chipmunks have cut out of the trees and then piled up in a hidden stash. They are resourceful little critters, who will diligently store up the things that they need in preparation for the coming winter.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Chipmunks can put away quite a bit of food, but we must be capable of doing the exact same thing. We must fill up our hearts to capacity, storing deep within them, the teachings of God’s Holy Word.
1 Peter 2:2-3 (KJB) As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
God’s Word is often referred to as a seed, something that hungry squirrels like to gather a lot of, but the hungrier that you are for something, the more aggressively that you will seek after it. To fill up our hearts with Spiritual food we must first be hungry for the teachings of our faith.
Luke 6:21 (KJB) Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled…..
The knowledge of God is one of the greatest treasures that you could ever find, but for most people, they are actively seeking after the things of this world instead. The intrinsic and incomparable value of biblical Truth is really not very important to them at all. Finding seeds is a primary concern to chipmunks, and it’s an activity that surrounds the better part of their day, and we can determine the level of someone’s faith simply by what they spend their day doing. Some are going to spend many hours on temporal things, completely entangled in earthly concerns that in the end, will not matter at all. Others who fear God will focus on the Eternal things that are found in our precious Lord Jesus Christ, seeking everlasting knowledge that will never be taken away.
2 Timothy 2:4 (KJB) No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
People can focus on storing up all the food they could ever need, they can amass all of the worldly riches that they could ever want, and they could even build the most beautiful and luxurious home in the world, but obtaining these things will never be able to save your soul. So in comparison to one’s own salvation, what are these things worth? Nothing at all.
Mark 8:36-37 (KJB) For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
If a chipmunk doesn’t seek their food, their burrow will be empty during the cold winter months. Likewise, those who choose not to fill up their hearts with the teachings of God Word are going to be unprepared for the events that are going to transpire in the future.
Matthew 25:1-13 (KJB) Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.
Many people consider a chipmunk a hoarder, amassing as many seeds as possible in their underground home. But if there is anything that we want to store up, it is the teachings of scripture! The more that we have deep inside of our hearts and our minds, the more prepared we are going to be. A farmer will pack his barn full of hay, and a wife will stack her cupboards full of food, but we must fill up our hearts with Spiritual things from the King James Bible! This is so we can fully understand the will of God, and perform the things that are pleasing in his sight.
Colossians 3:1 (KJB) If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
The things of Christ Jesus must be our first and primary concern in our lives, because nothing can take precedence over the matters that regard our relationship with the Lord Jesus and the things pertaining to our own salvation
Matthew 6:31-34 (KJB) Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
Although they are just animals, there is something to be learned when we observe the life of chipmunks. After all, they know what they desire in life, and they are seeking to obtain it the best way that they know how. Although they are solitary creatures and we might not see them very often, you can know for a fact that they are out there somewhere, and diligently preparing themselves for what is coming in the future. We too, must be prepared for what is coming in the future, by filling our cheeks regularly with the seeds of God’s Holy Word, and continuing to pack them into….
