The Glide Path

Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.

Since the very beginning of the use of commercial airplanes, it has always been extremely dangerous to attempt to land an aircraft during poor weather conditions. It can even be more treacherous than trying to drive your car in the dead of night without any functioning headlights. Whenever pilots have had to deal with fog, rain or snow, many times they were diverted to a safer landing spot. But sometime back around 1929, airports began to use a new piece of equipment known as the ILS, or instrument landing system. What this piece of hardware does is use radio signals to give pilots horizontal and vertical guidance information to lead them on their approach, even when their runway is completely obscured from view! But to land safely, the pilots need to stay on the glide path, which is provided constantly by the information from the ILS. Following the glide path will ensure that the aircraft is aligned properly with the runway, leading to a smooth and safe landing. It will also protect both the pilot and passengers from hitting any hidden obstacles along the way.

This reminds me of the Christian Life.

Like pilots that are traveling through stormy weather, we are passing through some perilous times of history, but just as pilots follow the directions from the ILS, we must follow the guidance of Holy Scripture. God’s Word can potentially save us, provided that we adhere to the things that it teaches. With trust and obedience we can land safely in heaven, as long as we stay on the glide path.

1 Timothy 4:16 (KJB)  Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

Doctrines are incredibly important in the Christian Life, and are defined as a set of beliefs or specific teachings and guidelines that adherents are expected to submit to and obey. In fact, we can only do the will of God when we humbly capitulate to the teachings of scripture. Doctrine is so important that it must regularly be attended to!

1 Timothy 4:13 (KJB)  Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

Doctrine must be preached!

2 Timothy 4:2 (KJB)  Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

Doctrine must not be blasphemed.

1 Timothy 6:1 (KJB)  Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.

Those who won’t submit to biblical teachings don’t have God.

2 John 1:9 (KJB)  Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

When the Bible speaks about doctrine in this verse, it’s talking about the teachings of scripture as a whole, and people really cannot understand and obey the teachings of the Christian Faith by only reading a few passages of the Bible. I mean, how can a wife prepare her husband’s favorite meal by only following 5% of the recipe? How can you put together a piece of furniture from the store when they forgot to put it in the instruction manual? The teachings of scripture have been put forth by men of God, in order to instruct us in the things that we need to know. Only when we are aware of God’s will, can we do God’s will, and to be good at anything lrequires gaining knowledge of the thing you want to be good at. To become a Christian, we must be educated in scriptural truth, transforming from children of the world into the children of God. Spiritual Knowledge is extremely important because in order for us to be completely transformed into what God expects us to be, we need to fully understand what God wants us to become!

James 1:5 (KJB) If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Some people will store up all of their riches in a bank, but the richest man of all is the one who has stored up all of the Spiritual treasures of God’s Word, deep inside of his heart. They are riches beyond compare

Luke 16:11 (KJB)  If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?

Proverbs 8:10-11 (KJB)  Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold. For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

Spiritual riches are priceless, because they can save the soul! This is why we need to grow in knowledge, because through it God is guiding us all the way home to our eternal landing strip. But we need to make sure that we don’t veer to the left or to the right, but stay on course, because without biblical truth in one’s life, people are going to be deceived by all the lies of this world.

Ephesians 4:14 (KJB)  That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

God has laid out a heavenly glide path for each of us to follow, and it is found throughout the teachings of the King James Bible. Normally when an airplane comes in for a landing, they come in at an angle of about three degrees, which really doesn’t allow much wiggle room if they are going to land their aircraft safely. It is a very narrow glide path, but if they follow the prescribed course of the ILS, it will eventually get them all the way to the runway.

Matthew 7:13-14 (KJB)  Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Like pilots in a storm, sometimes we cannot see where God is taking us, but we can know that if we submit to the doctrines of our faith, He is going to guide us all the way to the runway. God’s Word is capable of saving us, just as long as we adhere to its teachings, and continue to keep within,…..
