Good morning and welcome in everybody. Today, we are going to take a look at a passage of scripture, but before we do that I wanted to tell you a little story.
Many years ago, I took my family camping out in South Dakota, and eventually pitched our tent close to a dried up creek bed. But interestingly enough, that week they had torrential rainfalls, which filled up a lot of the rivers with an overflow of deep muddy water. One evening, when the rain had finally settled down, we watched as a large fleet of off-road vehicles crept slowly up to the river’s edge. Their lights filled up the darkness of the woods, just as brightly as the flood lights at a high school football game. Like a bunch of cautious crawdads, they slowly began to creep into the river, as water began pouring inside of their windows. To the sound of revving engines, we sat down in our camp chairs, not the ideal conditions for camping I know, but it was certainly interesting to watch. The water was so deep that some of their vehicles actually began losing traction on the bottom of the river, causing them to float momentarily like a bobber on a lake. I couldn’t really understand how they could operate a motor in water that deep, and finally came to the conclusion that their vehicles had been equipped with some type of breathing apparatus from the intake manifold. Later, I learned that these are called snorkels, which will allow a motor to go completely underneath the water and breathe fresh air through a pipe on the hood. If you were to attempt to do this without one, it can result in something known as hydrolock, when liquid enters into the motor and causes engine seizure and all other types of mechanical damage.
This reminds me of the Christian Life.
Water can be extremely damaging to a running engine, but sin can do the same type of thing. When sin is allowed to flow freely into one’s heart, it can severely damage one’s relationship with God. Unless it is repented of, and kept out of one’s life, it will eventually result in repercussions and Eternal consequences with God.
Galatians 6:7-8 (KJB) Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
A lot of people in our area like to run a greenhouse, or plant things in their gardens, but whatever you put into the soil is what’s going to come right back at you! I mean what’s the old saying, what goes around comes around? If you plant tomato seeds you are obviously going to get tomatoes, but if you sow sin, that is what you will reap!
Hosea 10:13-14 (KJB) Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye have eaten the fruit of lies: because thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men. Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people, and all thy fortresses shall be spoiled…….
Proverbs 10:16 (KJB) The labour of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.
Most of us have enough common sense to not touch a hot wood stove, because we know that we will get burned. Most farmers have developed a strong fear of a running PTO on a tractor because it can pull them in and kill them! Sin can have the same drastic effects when people openly reject the will of God, and follow their own way instead.
Proverbs 16:25 (KJB) There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
This is the reason why we need to listen to the teachings of scripture rather than our own counsel, because just like water can cause the death of an engine, living lives of sinfulness will cause the death of one’s soul.
James 1:15 (KJB) Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
Romans 6:23 (KJB) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
This is why we need the proper fear of God, because without it you will only find rebellion, disorder, and disobedience. Because of people’s lack of fear and repentance, God will afflict them with sickness, disease, and even death.
Psalms 55:19 (KJB) God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.
Psalms 89:7 (KJB) God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.
Luke 12:5 (KJB) But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
When people mock God, they completely disregard and contemptuously disrespect His will, and those who are going to intentionally sin against God in such a manner do not love Him at all. That kind of behavior is going to be punished by the Lord Jesus, and those who choose to live lives like that will be cursed.
1 Corinthians 16:22 (KJB) If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha.
We must keep ourselves in the love of God, which happens by obedience and humble submission to His will.
Jude 1:21 (KJB) Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
The will of God can be summed up in one simple word: repentance, because it is only through repentance towards God’s will that we can abide in His love, and demonstrate our love towards Him.
John 14:21-24 (KJB) He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.
God is going to reward people according to their works, whether they are good or bad, a comforting verse for those who are walking in the will of God, but not so soothing to the ears of the impenitent. Off-road riders must remember to put on the snorkel when they forge a deep river, and each of us must do the same. We need to keep our heads up and out of the water of sinful living, because failure to do so will not only lead to catastrophic failure, but will result in everlasting…..
